I haven’t given up anything in years…started practicing again and don’t know what to give up. Should it be something that’s a vice? Facebook? Candy? 🙂

I’m taking my Lenten hiatus from the internet. And cigarettes, hopefully for good this time.

Gosh, I just got over Advent! (I usually try to give up something for Advent, also!) I gave up facebook for 4 weeks!!!

For Lent I usually try to “do” something like read the Bible extra or say special prayers extra -Mercy Chaplet- for example… And then I try to “give up” something like cream in my coffee–I hate black coffee…!

I will be giving up my time.

When I am driving anywhere, I will not listen to any music, sports, or sports talk in my truck. Instead, only Catholic radio, prayer, or meditation. It will be hard, but that time could be given to the Lord.

Time is the only thing (besides life) that can be given and never taken back.

I will switch to decaf everything.

I will add some more prayer time and spiritual reading as well.

Last year I gave up alcohol and sweets, and added in a daily rosary.

The rosary became a daily habit due to that, so this year I’m giving up alcohol and sweets, and I’m going to add reading the Bible and good Catholic books every day and continue saying my daily rosary. I also want to increase my penances (fasting in particular is a penance I struggle with so I’m going to try to learn how to do it) and for almsgiving I will try to take the money I save with self-denial/fasting when it comes to food and donate that to the local Catholic homeless shelter.

Posting on advice threads on CAF

The games are a nice respite from work and stress, so I’ll keep doing one, maybe 2 of those, but I won’t answer any questions or comment on anything.
Many of my friends gave up CAF last year, and without exception they said it was the best thing they could have done.
So yeah.
No more time wasting on CAF, except to PM a friend or play one of those games once or twice a day.

Going to promise not to touch tobacco, wild wanton promiscuous sex and chocolate. Chocolate is going to be the hardest as I have never smoked and have a wonderful wife these last 21 years…

Not sure yet, but probably buying frivolous things…like more knitting looms (loom knitting is my hobby). Monday this week is when I make a decision on my last purchase until April or May. I can’t really give up sweets completely due to niece and nephew birthdays during lent.

Maybe try to ride my exercise bike daily.

Yup!👍 Me too. Best 40 days of my year, last year!

I always thought of the idea of giving something up for Lent is trivial. Consider, for example, having a great tasting fish dinner instead of a mediocre meat dish. Where’s the sacrifice? Better for me, I think, to do something positive in terms of bringing me closer to God. Taking the time to pray more is excellent; much better than giving up sweets. For me, as usual, I will be focusing on the Stations of the Cross.

I did this about 15 years ago. Gave up music on the radio, gave up reading anything that had nothing to do with Jesus… gave up movies except for the same if nothing to do with Jesus. Didn’t want to waste my time. Seems like there is so much in the world today to draw a person away from Jesus. It was the best thing I ever did! There are many great gospel songs both old and new I listen to now. And there are lots of great stories about the saints who love Jesus. Don’t think you will be bored with your decision!!!

Great plan!

Oh I don’t think I will be…

I think last year my wife and I read Dr. Scott Hahn’s “Signs of Life - 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots”. We read one chapter per day together. The year before that I prayed the Rosary in the morning when I woke up and evening before I went to bed. That was also time well spent.

I just don’t see how “giving something up” benefits anyone at all, especially since most people just go right back to what they gave up as soon as its Easter.

One year I gave up soda. Oh, boy… I have never smoked or been addicted to drugs or alcohol; but believe you me - I had some cravings that I didn’t know what to do with. I don’t know if it’s the caffeine or some other chemical they put in soda to make you crave it; but I was very much taken aback by how I felt.

I think Catholic radio programming should be just fine for me 🙂

Focusing on the Stations is vital. Yes.
But sacrifice of any kind is never trivial.
If we perceive that the fish dinner is a treat, that would not even qualify as a sacrifice in the first place.
It’s up to us to discern in advance, what would bother us to do without.
It’s a laudable practice, so long as we don’t make a big show of it…which, ironically, this thread does. 😉

Although people do like to get ideas.

😉 Not always. one of our Deacons and his wife gave up meat for all of Lent in 2010.
Still not eating meat going on 6 years later.
A catechist similarly gave sugar last year. Still going strong. 😃
