Hi, I know it’s probably a little early. What are you going to give up for Lent next year? I’m thinking caffeine.

Are you sadisitc or what? First, let’s enjoy the over-indulgence of Christmas before we start thinking about that! 😛

Hahahaha!!! No, I’m really not. I do like to plan ahead, though.

We are thinking about our Advent fast first. The first rule is always no buying anything for ourselves (other than necessities). This year we are cutting out sweets during Advent. I know that sounds crazy, but it will make Christmas and the Incarnation all the sweeter! Of course, then we’ll go through another sweet-free fast during Lent. Along with a spiritual reading discipline.

What I need now is a good reason to curb sweets over the summer…hmmmmmmm

I like to add something new every year. I give up refined sugar (allowing myself honey fruit pure maple syrup cane juice - natural stuff ) this year maybe I’ll cut maple syrup off the list.

I give up salt as an added ingredient.

strictly whole wheat ( not the fake stuff either )

eventually I’ll make it to bread and water  this coming from someone whose pizza hut buffet record is 25 slices.

I’ll recommit to the daily rosary it’s rather intermittent now perhaps an advent devotion is in store for me.

ooh, I know this year if I haven’t done so by then I am gonna shut off the cable for good.

and of course no sinning 👍

I give up wine. I’m one of those glass or two people a day. It’s something I enjoy, and we should give up something we enjoy.

My wife does chocolate.

Good to plan ahead I think.😃 I was planning my Advent meditations a few months ago, so I’m all geared up and ready to run.

I love Easter, it is my favourite celebration. I will be giving up chocolate like I did last year because it is very hard for me to do and I was pleased to be able to offer this small thing to Jesus because He knows what a struggle it is for me. I like to do extra things during Lent and Advent, so write at least one letter a week, telephone friends and family more often, send someone flowers, etc well things like this to make a smile come to someone’s face, just little acts of kindness.

well i don’t eat meat anyway so i could do that …but that wouldn’t even be trying…

can’t give up salt because i have to have it for health reasons…

i gave up chocolate for 2 lents i think…and i did manage to do it…and at any other time no one bothered me with chocolate but once lent began i had people buying me luxury chocolate…icecream with chocolate etc…it was very tempting with peoploe saying you can eat it…its only a bit of chocolate it doesn’t count…i felt bad for refusing all the stuff people gave me but i am happy to say i saw those lents through to the end without giving in…

i haven’t given much thought to what i will give up next lent

Last year it was smoking. My husband gave up red meat - therefore so did I! We also incorporated additional time the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

This year I think it will be all sweets, of the baked variety - my HUGE weakness. Along with additional prayer, a daily secret kindness, some volunteer work and I think no complaining.

Check with me after Easter to see if I can do all that. I’m thinking if I can pass up pie with no complaints, the rest will be a piece of cake - no pun intended!

Sleep. I’ll have a one month old baby by then, God willing. 😃

I may try to give up CA - but I’m really addicted. Is there a CA patch I can get maybe?

I usually give up TV news and my morning tea - both rituals that I truly enjoy. This year I will also try to be better about doing some spiritual reading and pray more. I may even consider totally unplugging the tv from the wall. Though not sure if I’m really that strong.

I’ve been thinking about doing the traditional Lenten fast, nothing from an animal (is that vegan?) so no meat, dairy, eggs, etc.

But I’d be able to have all the sugar I want!..as long as it’s not in a pastry…

Since I am diabetic giving up foods isn’t really an option (except for no meat on the Fridays of Lent). I am alone all day. The TV and CDs are my “company.” So, I give up audio and video every day until my dh gets home from work. It is hard for the first few days, but by the end of Lent listening to the tube/radio/CDs, etc. seems like an intrusion on my day.

I don’t know what to give up.

I think I am going to try to be selfless in conversation. It’s not that I am selfish per sai, just a talker.

For example somebody might come up and tell me that their uncle has cancer of the brain or soemthing and then I share that my Grandpa also had cancer of the brain. Sharing about myself for some reason in enjoyable for me. I think instead I am going to work on keeping the conversation purly about them adn just offer them prayers. I will only talk about me if they ask.

Maybe this sounds silly to all of you but if you knew how much I enjoy talking you would understand. It will be hard for me.

I am thinking of making myself do some strenuous exercise everyday, coupled with a few other small things I dislike doing.

Truthfully, I have forgotten all the things you’re required to do. All I remember is you’re supposed to give up or do something personal (like giving up sweets or donating money, etc) along with no meat on Fridays.

Anybody have a good link for me to read up on what else you’re supposed to do?
