But in any case I see what you were trying to get at now. Well as you said you won’t accept any evidence for Purgatory but still you should be aware of it. The biblical basis for Purgatory is in 1 Cor 3:15 it is then supported by Matt. 12:32 and Rev. 21:27. Historically we see the belief in affect at least by the second century. I realize that the Bible and history has impacted you thus far but there it is anyway.
Firstly I will say my understanding of Purgatory actually is. Basically that in order to clease us fully from sin we must have them purged out of us in Purgatory. There also certain things that we can do to reduce our time their.
I realise there’s probably more depth to it than that but that’s pretty much the jist of it. So unless I’ve got something completely wrong can we leave that as our definition?
Now lets see what the Bible says in the verses you have given me. I will give several different translations. NKJV, NIV and NLT. Just to compare verses to make this accurate. I will start at verse 12 to put this into context.
1 Corinthians 3:12-15
NKJV
12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
NIV
12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.
14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
NLT
12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.
The passage is talking about our work that we do for Christ being examined to see if it really is work for Christ. If it is, then we will be rewarded. However if it does nothing for Christ then we won’t get any reward. Verse 15 says we will still be saved except only just. When looked at in context this is not talking about purgatory. The term “as someone escaping through flames” is meaning only just making it. Not that we have to be purged out of our remaining sins by fire.
Matt 12:32
32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.
This is saying that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is unforgivable. It is not saying that there are some sins that God will not forgive in this world but only in the next after they have been purged out.
Revelation 21:27
27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
This verse is just saying that no one with sin can enter the Kingdom of God. Nothing to do with Purgatory.
This is the big problem with Purgatory though - it says that Christ’s sacrifice was not enough to clense us of our sin. Lets see what the Bible says about this.
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness.”
1 John 2:2 “And
He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”
Hebrews 10:10 “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ
once for all.”
The Bible says that it is Christ’s sacrifice alone that clenses us from all sin. Either we accept Him or reject Him. However as Hebrews 10:38-39 says “And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away. 39 But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.”
So you see when we accept Christ we are made fully righteous. These verses make it very clear that we are. If Purgatory were real then it would be in disagreement with the Bible because it is saying that we are made right by a means other than Christ. Those who reject Christ will be destroyed.
