Benu,
Even if what you say is true, if the early Christians practiced it, what gives you the authority to say it’s not true, and that Christ does not desire us to practice it?

Early Christian writings on this:
The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity
This Dinocrates had been my brother after the flesh, seven years of age, who died miserably with disease. . . . For him I had made my prayer, and between him and me there was a large interval, so that neither of us could approach to the other . . . and * knew that my brother was in suffering. But I trusted that my prayer would bring help to his suffering; and I prayed for him every day until we passed over into the prison of the camp, for we were to fight in the camp-show. Then . . . I made my prayer for my brother day and night, groaning and weeping that he might be granted to me. Then, on the day on which we remained in fetters, this was shown to me: I saw that the place which I had formerly observed to be in gloom was now bright; and Dinocrates, with a clean body well clad, was finding refreshment. . . . [And] he went away from the water to play joyously, after the manner of children, and I awoke. Then I understood that he was translated from the place of punishment.
Cyprian of Carthage
It is one thing, tortured by long suffering for sins, to be cleansed and long purged by fire; another to have purged all sins by suffering. It is one thing, in fine, to be in suspense till the sentence of God at the day of judgment; another to be at once crowned by the Lord.
Gregory of Nyssa
If a man distinguish in himself what is peculiarly human from that which is irrational, and if he be on the watch for a life of greater urbanity for himself, in this present life he will purify himself of any evil contracted, overcoming the irrational by reason. If he has inclined to the irrational pressure of the passions, using for the passions the cooperating hide of things irrational, he may afterward in a quite different manner be very much interested in what is better, when, after his departure out of the body, he gains knowledge of the difference between virtue and vice and finds that he is not able to partake of divinity until he has been purged of the filthy contagion in his soul by the purifying fire.
John Chrysostom
Weep for those who die in their wealth and who with all their wealth prepared no consolation for their own souls, who had the power to wash away their sins and did not will to do it. Let us weep for them, let us assist them to the extent of our ability, let us think of some assistance for them, small as it may be, yet let us somehow assist them. But how, and in what way? By praying for them and by entreating others to pray for them, by constantly giving alms to the poor on their behalf. Not in vain was it decreed by the apostles that in the awesome mysteries remembrance should be made of the departed. They knew that here there was much gain for them, much benefit.
Augustine
“There is an ecclesiastical discipline, as the faithful know, when the names of the martyrs are read aloud in that place at the altar of God, where prayer is not offered for them. Prayer, however, is offered for other dead who are remembered. It is wrong to pray for a martyr, to whose prayers we ought ourselves be commended”

“But by the prayers of the holy Church, and by the salvific sacrifice, and by the alms which are given for their spirits, there is no doubt that the dead are aided, that the Lord might deal more mercifully with them than their sins would deserve. The whole Church observes this practice which was handed down by the Fathers: that it prays for those who have died in the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, when they are commemorated in their own place in the sacrifice itself; and the sacrifice is offered also in memory of them, on their behalf. If, then, works of mercy are celebrated for the sake of those who are being remembered, who would hesitate to recommend them, on whose behalf prayers to God are not offered in vain? It is not at all to be doubted that such prayers are of profit to the dead; but for such of them as lived before their death in a way that makes it possible for these things to be useful to them after death”

“Temporal punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by some after death, by some both here and hereafter, but all of them before that last and strictest judgment. But not all who suffer temporal punishments after death will come to eternal punishments, which are to follow after that judgment”

“That there should be some fire even after this life is not incredible, and it can be inquired into and either be discovered or left hidden whether some of the faithful may be saved, some more slowly and some more quickly in the greater or lesser degree in which they loved the good things that perish, through a certain purgatorial fire”

“The time which interposes between the death of a man and the final resurrection holds souls in hidden retreats, accordingly as each is deserving of rest or of hardship, in view of what it merited when it was living in the flesh. Nor can it be denied that the souls of the dead find relief through the piety of their friends and relatives who are still alive, when the Sacrifice of the Mediator [Mass] is offered for them, or when alms are given in the Church. But these things are of profit to those who, when they were alive, merited that they might afterward be able to be helped by these things. There is a certain manner of living, neither so good that there is no need of these helps after death, nor yet so wicked that these helps are of no avail after death”.

Again, by what authority do you state that these great men and women were wrong? Why should I take your word over St. Augustine’s?*

The equation goes something like this:

If the Church for 2000 years has taught such and so to be true based upon Scripture and Tradition; and if

Benu and a few Protestants have come up with an idea that cannot be supported by Scripture or Tradition and in some ways disagrees with the Church

Therefore, according to Benu, we are to side with his interpretations in every case and against the Apostles, Prophets, Christ, and what the Church has taught for 2000 years.

The Church has everywhere and at all times called such people as Benu heretics and rightly so. We pray for the lost but do not side with their scandle.

I belong to a nondenominational homeschool group. My oldest child is in eighth grade and didn’t participate in the latest ecumenical difficulty. 🙂

*To all the Catholics who will ask: Yes, the belief statement that I signed to join the group was compatible with Catholic theology. *

Recently, a Protestant Missionary gave a talk to the high school class. Not realizing that some of the kids were Catholic, she asked them the question, “What are you protesting?”

It was a question that an Eastern Orthodox Russian had asked her. It made an impression on her.

She ended the talk by asking the kids to go home and talk the question over with their parents.

One of my Catholic friends in the group is dialoguing with the leader of the class about some of the things that came up in discussion (including a statement–unrefuted-- by a student that Catholics worship people).

But, I was wondering what these parents might be saying to their high schoolers.

So, if your high schooler came home and asked, “What are we protesting?”–how would you answer?
I would say “We’re not protesting anything (that’s why, technically, we’re not Protestants). We’re standing up for the authority of God’s word, the Biblical doctrine of imputed righteousness, the Biblical doctrine of eternal security, the Biblical doctrine of sola fide and sola gratis, etc.”

Benu,
Even if what you say is true, if the early Christians practiced it, what gives you the authority to say it’s not true, and that Christ does not desire us to practice it?

Again, by what authority do you state that these great men and women were wrong? Why should I take your word over St. Augustine’s?
My authority to say this comes not from myself but from the apostles themselves. All you have shown is how other traditions made their way into Christianity. Again explain to me how the Apostle John could have said that Christ made us fully righteous (1 John 1:9) when we are supposed to have remaining unrighteousness when we die which needs to be purged out. Are you trying to say that Augustine has more authority than the apostle John?

Also the Thessalonians were concerned that because some of their bretheren had died it meant that they would miss out on eternal life when Christ came.
What was Pauls response?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.
Notice how he didn’t say, “don’t worry just offer prayers for the dead and they will receive life to.” No, he said that they had no need to worry because they believed that Jesus rose from the dead and so they will also be raised to life too.

And another point. The bible says that no unrighteousness can enter Heaven right? And you say that we have to have unrighteousness purged out of us in purgatory. What about those who are alive when Jesus returns? How can they get into Heaven straight away but those who died before hand have to suffer in Purgatory?

1 Thessalonians 4:17
Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.

So if you could answer this it would be very much appreciated.

1 Matthew 16 18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 18 17 And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.

Ephesians 3 10 That the manifold wisdom of God may be made known to the principalities and powers in heavenly places through the church,

Acts Of Apostles 20 28 Take heed to yourselves, and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Hebrews 13 17 Obey your prelates, and be subject to them. For they watch as being to render an account of your souls; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief. For this is not expedient for you.

Acts Of Apostles 14 22 And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.

1 Corinthians 12 28 And God indeed hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors; after that miracles; then the graces of healing, helps, governments, kinds of tongues, interpretations of speeches.

You haven’t once backed anything up with scripture whereas I have backed up everything with scripture.

Your Church started off well then got more and more corrupt over time until it was acumilating great wealth to not feed the poor but build great palaces. One of it’s heads even hosted an orgie. That is corruption in the highest.

But what about this man, Johann Tetzel. He was sent to sell indulgences to the masses in order to raise money for St. Peters Briscillica. He would say, As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs. In other words claiming that you could pay your way out of purgatory.

Martin Luther protests against this. And who is labled a heretic? Not Johann Tetzel.

“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

Phillipians 3:17-19
Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. 18 For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

Killing in the name of Christ - the Crusades. Accumultating great wealth - through indulgences (read about Johann Tetzel). Not allowing the bible in English. Having orgies (Pope Alexander VI)
These are not things of Christ therefore it shows that they do not belong to Him or are even part of the Church. They may be disguised as harmless sheep because they are leaders in the Church, but their actions clearly show they do not belong to Him. Therefore I couldn’t care less what they decree. I do, however follow what the bible says, which was written by the Church yet you still argue against me.

Of course I obey my teachers but I test what they say.

1 Thessalonians 5:20-22
Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil.

Acts 17:11
And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

Galations 2:6
*And the leaders of the church had nothing to add to what I was preaching. (By the way, their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no favorites.) *

Just because people are leaders, even apostles, does not mean that you should take everything they say without testing it first.
And by the way. We are all the Church. The Church is not just the leaders. Remember the Head of the Church is Christ. So He has more authority than any leader in the Church. No leader has the right to say people do not belong to the Church way they have sincerely called on the name of the Lord.

As for your Acts 14:22.
You said
And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.

Actually says
where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God. NLT

I think you’re talking about verse 23 so lets compare

Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. NLT

*Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. * NIV

When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. NASB

And when they had appointed and ordained elders for them in each church with prayer and fasting, they committed them to the Lord in Whom they had come to believe [being full of joyful trust that He is the Christ, the Messiah]. Amplified Bible

So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. NKJV

*And when they had appointed for them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they had believed. * ASV

And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. KJV

The translation of elders into preists is not correct. So weren’t ordained as priests it was as elders. Some version even point out that it was done by a vote. Not Paul and Barnabas’ choosing. They just organised it.

Well then doesn’t that show you that they weren’t part of the Church either? I don’t really care what other churches have done. But I live my life for Christ. Don’t you see that is what makes us part of the Church. It is not who we follow or what sect we are part of.

Benu,

Sorry about posting James 2:20 earlier calling you a senseless person. By reading your posts I think that you are doing your best to live for Jesus and are probably doing much better than many Catholics in that regard.

But, I noticed a few posts earlier that you think it is not necessary to belong to the Church:

“Don’t you see that is what makes us part of the Church. It is not who we follow or what sect we are part of.”

Are you familiar with Early Christian Writers such as Ignatius of Antioch, Clement of Rome …

They were disciples of the Apostles, and thus obviously had a much clearer idea of Christ’s message than any of us could ever dream of. Would what they said, have any effect on your beleif? If so, I will post some excerpts, if not I’ll leave ya alone.

My authority to say this comes not from myself but from the apostles themselves.
Oh, so now you’re a self-proclaimed pope.
All you have shown is how other traditions made their way into Christianity.
These traditions you speak of were there from the very beginning.
Again explain to me how the Apostle John could have said that Christ made us fully righteous (1 John 1:9) when we are supposed to have remaining unrighteousness when we die which needs to be purged out. Are you trying to say that Augustine has more authority than the apostle John?
I’m saying all those men have more authority than you, actually. You do not speak for the apostles. The early church fathers in some cases learned directly from the apostles. You learned from people who so disliked certain concepts that they had to physically take books out of the Bible so they wouldn’t have to see what supports those concepts.
Notice how he didn’t say, “don’t worry just offer prayers for the dead and they will receive life to.”
He didn’t say that because that’s not how the concept of Purgatory works.
No, he said that they had no need to worry because they believed that Jesus rose from the dead and so they will also be raised to life too.
Which in no way negates the concept of Purgatory.
And another point. The bible says that no unrighteousness can enter Heaven right? And you say that we have to have unrighteousness purged out of us in purgatory. What about those who are alive when Jesus returns? How can they get into Heaven straight away but those who died before hand have to suffer in Purgatory?
As I understand the way it will work, Purgatory will exist until the last soul leaves it, and then it will no longer exist.

Thank you for actually going over and reading my posts It is very much appriciated.

I will read what you have to post from the Early fathers. But my point about purgatory is this. Jesus’ sacrifice sacrifice makes us totally righteous in Gods eyes. It leaves out no sin. I’ve shown that in 1 John 1:9 and other verses. It is very clear what is being said. So if Christs sacrifice cleanses us from all unrighteousness then why do we have to go to purgatory when we have already been made completely holy. Even if the early Church fathers do say something about purgatory it still goes againsts the idea that Christ makes us fully righteous which is what the Apostles were saying.

Also Paul says in1 Thessalonians 4:17 that those who are alive will be caught up into the air on Christ’s second comming. Then they will be with the Lord forever. If they go straight to be with the Lord without Purgatory then why do those who have died need to have there sins purged?

People in this forum keep saying that I am twisting scripture but these two are pretty plain and I don’t see how they could be read any other way. If purgatory was real then why is it never explicitly mentioned in the Bible. These are just some questions I have that no one has been able to answer except say that I am wrong or that I am not reading the scripture properly.

Any answers would be much appreciated.

I am merely quoting scripture to you. That’s why I say my authoruty comes the apostles. Not that I am someone great.

You still haven’t answered my questions. If Christ has cleansed us from all unrighteousness then why do we need purgatory.

When Christ returns those alive will go straight to the Lord. Why is it they don’t need to go to Purgatory.

What scripture in the New Testament (considering we disagree on books in the Old Testament) speaks plainly on the concept of purgatory you have talked about?
