What are you supposed to pray about before Mass?

I notice that when most people come to Mass, they kneel down and pray for a while. My family doesn’t do that. I was wondering what you’re supposed to be praying about at that time. Just the typical stuff, or something more special relating to the coming Mass?
 
Could be typical stuff and stuff related to the Mass (be it your own prayer in that regard or a ‘set’ prayer).

Personally, I go 30 minutes before Mass. I pray the Rosary. I then pray that the Father is pleased by the Mass, and that as a community we are able to worship His glory. I ask that the Holy Spirit be with me, and I pray that I may receive the Eucharist in a worthy state. I pray especially for the priest - that he may say a reverent Mass, and I pray in general about other things on my mind. It’s a nice way to compose yourself before Mass starts. It would also be good for you to stay after Mass for 5-10 minutes giving thanks.

I’ve started attending Mass daily. If I arrive early I have begun praying the Jesus prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner). I don’t think there’s a required pre Mass prayer, though I see a lot of rosaries out before Mass.

I have heard, long ago, that it is best to arrive before Mass at least 20 minutes or so, so that we may prepare ourselves for Mass. It takes at least 20 minutes or so, to get the “dust of the world” off our minds, etc., and sort of empty ourselves of self.

We should view attending Mass with the same reverence as if we were at the foot of the Cross on Calvary, because, for all intents and purposes, that’s what we’re doing. 🙂
 
Missals contain beautiful prayers to be offered before and after Mass and after receiving Holy Communion.
 
I try to arrive for daily (weekday) Mass at about 0700.

To prepare myself for Mass, I begin with the daily reading from the Rule of St Benedict. Then, the Introduction, Hymn, First Nocturn, Absolution and Lesson from Monastic Breviary Matins. Morning Prayers from Liturgy of the Hours are prayed in community from about 0740 to 0755.

While our Priests are vesting for the 0800 OF Mass, I silently pray Prayers at the Foot of the Altar (Psalm 42) and the Confiteor. After Mass, I silently pray the Last Gospel (John 1:1-14), Pater Noster, Ave Maria, Fatima Prayer and close with the Signum Crucis.
 
I usually go to mass early about 30 minutes on Friday. I say novena or I go and pray where the Holy Eucharistic is, I know some people go to confession before mass is said. On sunday I say a novena before mass starts.

Since I’ve made total consecration to Mary, I ask her to prepare me to receive Christ in the Eucharist worthily, and to use me to praise God as He ought to be praised when I sing at 5 pm Mass on Saturdays.

There coulod be many things they are prayinf for. PPerhaps someone is sick injn their family or they can just be adoring God for another day. It shows more respect when one comes in and knees and prays.

The time prior to Mass, in the presence if Christ in the Tabernacle (if He is indeed reserved there) is the time to prepare our hearts and minds to receive Him - Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity.

This thread really helped me today in getting in the right attitude of prayer before Mass.
 
I ask God to clear my mind and help me to receive his message. Also, if I am cantoring, I thank God for the opportunity to sing his praise and for him to use me to spread his message to others.
 
There a plenty of things you can pray or pray about before Mass as other posters have listed. One of the reasons for why I love my Saint Andrews Missal is because it has a section that lists prayers before Mass and after Mass. They consist of some Psalms, and prayers from Saint Ambros and Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Here is one of the prayers used before Mass:

Eternal Father, I unite myself with the intentions and affections of our Lady of Sorrows on Calvary, and I offer Thee the Sacrifice which Thy beloved Son Jesus made of Himself on the Cross and which He now renews on this holy altar:
  1. To adore Thee and give Thee the honor which is due Thee, confessing Thy supreme dominion over all things, and the absolute dependence of everything upon Thee, Who art our one and last End.
  2. To thank Thee for innumerable benefits received.
  3. To appease Thy justice, aroused against us by so many sins, and to make satisfaction for them.
  4. To implore grace and mercy for myself, for my loved ones, for my friends and enemies, and for all afflicted and sorrowing, for poor sinners, for all the world, and for the holy souls in Purgatory.
Pax Dómini sit semper vobíscum.
 
I say I love you and thank you for everything. 🙂 It only takes a second because honestly I walk in right on time. LOL Anyway, there is no wrong way to pray!! 🙂
 
Sometimes I pray the Liturgy of the Hours before Mass - usually morning prayer, sometimes evening prayer, depending on where I go. Most importantly, however, pray for the grace to worthily receive Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament… Here is a good one from the Imitation of Christ:

Lord, all that is Heaven and on earth is Yours.
  1. I wish to offer myself up to You as a voluntary sacrifice and to remain always Yours.
Lord, in the simplicity of my heart, I offer myself to You today as a perpetual servant, for a homage and sacrifice of eternal praise to You.

Receive me with this holy oblation of Your precious Body, which I offer to You this day, in the presence of Your Angels, invisible assistants, that it may be a salvation for me and for all the people.
  1. Lord, I offer to You upon Your altar of propitiation all my sin and offences, which I have committed in Your presence and in that of Your holy Angels, from the first day that I was capable of sin until the present so that You may burn them and consume them all with the fire of Your charity, and cancel all the stains of my sins, and purify my conscience of every fault and restore me Your grace, which I have lost by sinning, fully pardoning me all, and mercifully receiving me in the kiss of peace.
  2. What can I do with my sins except humbly confess them, and weep for them, and constantly implore Your pardon.
Mercifully hear me, I beseech You, 0 my God, while I am in Your presence.

0 Lord, remove from our hearts all suspicion, indignation, wrath and contention, and anything else which may offend charity, and diminish fraternal love.

Have mercy, 0 Lord, have mercy on those who ask Your mercy; give Your grace to those who lack it, and make us worthy to merit to enjoy Your grace and to attain to life everlasting. Amen

PRAYER

I adore You, my Sweet Jesus, with respect as my God, with confidence as my Savior, with love as my Father, with humility and fear as my Judge. I offer the Holy Mass which I assist at and the Holy Communion, which I receive to obtain pardon for my sins, the conversion of sinners and the sanctification of all the just.
