Amazingly enough, Keel was disappointed in his own voice. He had always wished to be a baritone instead of the *basso cantante *(the highest of the bass voices) which he was.
More movie trivia: in the video clip from Calamity Jane, the actor playing the officer (in the back seat of the wagon) is Phil Carey who later went on to play Asa Buchanan in the soap opera One Life to Live.

The lyrics of this were changed by Robeson and many others,
The 1951 version is a short version compared to the original.
