At my university parish, the students play music for communion during Wednesday night Mass. Most of the students that have done it so far have gone the more modern route with music, playing songs like “Oceans” and “Good Good Father”…I want to play a more classic Catholic communion hymn, but I can’t think of that many right now. What are some good ones?

Lord I Need You and 10,000 Reasons are both my favorite during communion. Just out of curiosity, do you go to the Wednesday night Cor Jesu mass at St. Roberts parish in Shorewood, WI? My local newman center does mass on wednesday nights and it sounds like it.

There is a song I haven’t heard in a while that I think is very appropriate. It is “Where Charity and Love Prevail.”

Anima Christi

Now let every mortal be silent or whatever it could be translated to in English. Text written by G Moultrie who based it on the text Sigesato pasa sarx, an early Christian Greek hymn.

There is a group of Psalms from which I pick one and read/meditate on after I receive Our Lord

We just sang that last week (Where Charity and Love Prevail).
I was a bit annoyed that the lyrics had been rewritten to remove all the male pronouns for God. I sang the male pronoun lyrics anyway.

I frankly prefer it when they just do an instrumental for Communion.
I pray before Communion, then I have to concentrate on getting myself up the aisle and back (can be tricky with a crowd or in older churches), then I have thanksgiving prayer and other prayers to make afterwards.
It’s a challenge trying to pray while everybody is singing.
I really wish we did not have to sing at this point in the Mass. I would like to concentrate on having just received Our Lord.

I Received the Living God
Draw us in the Spirit’s Tether
Let us Break Bread together
I am the Bread of Life
Gift of Finest Wheat
Soul of my Savior(Anima Christi)
Jesus my Lord, my God, my All
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

There are plenty more.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

It works with an organ or stripped down with guitar and everything inbetween

No, I go to St. John’s Parish at Oklahoma State. That’s pretty cool that you all do that as well though. Is your Wednesday 9pm Mass also a candlelight Mass?

I really love the hymn “I Am the Bread of Life” which is a very stereotypical Catholic communion hymn, much more so than modern praise and worship music

  1. Behold the Lamb
  2. Remembrance - Hillsong
  3. Remembrance - Matt Redman
  4. Be known to us in breaking bread
  5. Here at Thy Table Lord

Whatever antiphon is in the Graduale Romanum.

Among those, Qui manducat, and Gustate et Videte are some of the favourites, off the top of my head, but there are others…

In no particular order

Pan De Vida
El Cuerpo De Christe (might not be the title, but it goes A-a-a-amen el Cuerpo de Christe. A-a-a-amen la Sangre del Señor. Eating your Body, drinking your Blood. We become what we receive a-a-amen a-a-a-a-men.)
Taste and See

And quite a few I cannot recall right now.

To echo @Start, the sound of silence. The actual sound, not the song.
