What are your favorite song/dance routines from Hollywood musicals?

I’m in no way a scholar of musicals, although I do enjoy them.

I’ve long been a fan of “L’Chaim/To Life” in Fiddler on the Roof. Something about everyone being tipsy but still managing to step on the beat - amazing how they do that. 😉 It’s also a very nice moment in the film - the Russian and Jewish communities actually getting along and celebrating an engagement (never mind that the bride is not interested and it doesn’t actually happen. ;))

It’s a pivotal scene in which the Fraser character begins to emerge as more than a man out of his time in history. It’s a cute film–definitely underrated by the critics.

Great dance scene! It’s too bad that their dance in the sequel, “The Legend of Zorro”, didn’t measure up. Alejandro (Banderas) basically was a drunken cad in that scene. Actually the whole of that movie was pretty forgettable.

I read an interview with Antonio Banderas, where he said that Catherine Zeta Jones and Anthony Hopkins were talking a lot around him in their native Welsh while making the first Zorro film, and he joked that he was worried that they were talking about him. Having grown up hearing people worry that people speaking Spanish might be “talking about” the people voicing that worry, I thought that was pretty funny.

Interesting. I did not know anthony hopkins was welsh.
 
It’s hard to beat the chorus line song and dance routine, “Maidens Typical of France,” led by Juliet Prowse in Can-Can. The feet of the whole chorus line all come down at the same time [similar to Riverdance].

Juliet Prowse. That is a name I have not heard in awhile.

Yup. We lived just a block north of the Celebrity (formerly the Star Theater) on Garfield (attended St. Marks Elementary School), so we went over there a lot. I saw Jack Benney, Frank Gorshin, Waylon Jennings, Seals and Croft, and a whole bunch of plays. I think Prowse was in a road show of Irma La Douce. As a young adult, I went over to see Parliament Funkadelic for a New Years Eve show there. Also saw Marni Nixon, who dubbed the singing for a lot of actresses, who did a great show (she was also one of the nuns in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.)
 
This is so hard…but this what immediately comes to mind.

“Gaston” (Beauty and the Beast) - in particular the version from the musical that includes a big dance number with elaborate beer mugs clinking.

“With Catlike Tread” (The Pirates of Penzance) - especially the 1983 movie.

I love Big Ham numbers. 🙂
 
Love “Catlike Tread” from Pirates of Penzance ('83) – also love “I am a Pirate King” and just about all of the rest of Pirates of Penzance. Kevin Kline gets my vote as most underrated performer.
 
I don’t know if this one has been mentioned yet: “Masquerade” from Phantom of the Opera.
