I could use some inspiration! I used to be much better at remembering to pray for those in purgatory and I want to motivate myself to help them again. Also, if you have any inspiring quotes from saints about the Holy Souls, that would be wonderful!

Offering Mass, especially, is efficacious. I also say the St. Gertrude prayer daily.

I like working to gain indulgences for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

There are three plenary indulgences coming up! They are for participating in the liturgies on Holy Thursday evening, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. So don’t forget to pray for the Holy Father’s intentions each day, and go to confession at some point.

Prayer of St. Gertrude is the easiest/quickest way to get a 1000 souls into purgatory. Its wording takes about 15 seconds to pray. It is very similar to but more ancient than the divine mercy prayer but doesn’t take as long.

I start each day’s prayer with this:

OFFERING

"ALMIGHTY and eternal God! I offer Thee all my
prayers, works, and sufferings in union with the
Sacred Heart of Jesus, for the intentions for which
He pleads and offers Himself in the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass, in thanksgiving for Thy favors, in repara-
tion for my offenses, and in humble supplication for
my temporal and eternal welfare, for the wants of our
holy Mother the Church, for the conversion of sinners,
and for the relief of the poor souls in purgatory.

I have the intention to gain all the indulgences
attached to the prayers I shall say, and to the good
works I shall perform this day. I resolve to gain all
the indulgences I can in favor of the souls in purgatory."

Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed, Glory.

This gives all partial and plenary indulges earned to the poor souls.

I do a daily family rosary with my wife, so on the days I receive Communion, I earn a plenary for the poor souls. I receive Communion four and sometimes five days a week.

I offer an additional morning Rosary, and a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, in the afternoon. My evening prayers include St. Gertrude’s prayer, The Heroic Act of Charity, and Prayers of Supplication for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.

These are just some ideas. I look after my elderly parents, so I have quite a bit of idle time which I use for prayer.

I give my indulgences to them.

I say the St. Gertrude prayer once a day.

When I pass a graveyard I say the Eternal Rest prayer for the souls in the graveyard and usually extend it to a greater group as well, like “all those buried in the county”, “all deceased Episcopalians” (if I’m passing an Episcopalian cemetery for example), etc.

At Adoration I try to say a Divine Mercy for all who are dying in the hour.

I write names of deceased people in the intention books at churches and Adoration chapels.

After every closing Sign of the Cross I pray, “Jesus have mercy on the souls in Purgatory and the souls on earth”. I was taught this as a tiny child by my mother, who always did it.

Sometimes I have Masses said for them or offer a Mass I attend for them.

In November I do the devotion where for the first 9 days you pray for the dead in a graveyard and get a plenary indulgence for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

On Mondays I do a devotion specifically for the souls of deceased priests. It also includes saying a Rosary for all the holy souls.

St John Macias used to sprinkle Holy Water on the Ground for the souls in purgatory and say the following prayer:

“By this holy water and by Thy precious blood, wash away all my sin, O Lord, and relieve the souls in purgatory,” and then make the sign of the cross.
I do that as well whenever I bless myself, although not always with those exact words.
