The very talented Frankie Lymon, inspiration for Michael Jackson–and a sad case of a far too early overdose death.

So Wednesday night I went to a local minor league baseball game (well sorta local - it’s a one hour drive) and during an inning break they played the Scatman song. I’ve been researching the artist, Scatman John, the last couple of days. Turns out he had a severe stuttering problem, and used “scat singing” as a way to turn that negative into a positive. Sadly he died in 1999 a week after collapsing at a concert (he was suffering from lung cancer), but he apparently died at peace, he said, “Whatever God wants is fine by me … I’ve had the very best life. I have tasted beauty.” Prayers for his soul, and here is his signature song for your enjoyment. A couple of the verses directly address his stuttering.

Edited to add: Having had a stuttering problem myself when I was young, I appreciate that Scatman John used the lyrics of this song to encourage other stutterers.

My Theme song!!!

Sister and me were in the living room,

Busy coloring chairs that we lay on,

No signs of gloom, a quiet affair,

That is until I borrowed her crayon

I cannot lie it’s the one she loves the best and

I don’t know why I put her to the test

But I had no idea she’d get this distressed

Now she’s having a meltdown

Didn’t know that she felt down

A m-m-m-m-m meltdown

Then Dad walked in and stared at us in awe Couldn’t quite understand what the deal was Or what he saw, I took my sister’s hand Gave her her crayon and said sorry cause

I was aware that we were in a bind

Dad’s antique chairs were covered in colored lines And I guess he’s not a fan of those rainbow designs

Now he’s having a meltdown Didn’t know that he felt down A m-m-m-m-m meltdown

He’s having an M-E-L-T-D-O-W-N

D-O-W-N down.

I’d stop the world and wait for you to KETCHUP

But it turns and turns and you must be heard you

MUSTARD MUSTARD must be heard

Cause you’re having a meltdown

Didn’t know that you felt down

We’re all having a meltdown

We’re all having an M-E-L-T-D-O-W-N D-O-W-N down.

And I know that this might sound outrageous, outrageous

But a meltdown is contagious, contagious

Now Dad and me were having an M-E-L-T-D – down

Now Mom and me were having an M-E-L-T-D – down

And I’d stop the world and meltdown with you.
