What are your feelings toward the Life Teen Masses offered in many parishes?

Oh, I don’t take it personally. It’s a bit disconcerting that someone whose read two of my posts thinks I’m not properly catechized, but I won’t lose sleep over it.
 
From what I’ve read here I wouldn’t be a fan; contemporary Christian music that happens in church just isn’t too good.
 
I cannot say enough about our LifeTeen Masses:thumbsup:. I know that my daughter has developed a very strong Catholic faith based on the support of the people involved in LifeTeen. These teens represent the future enrollment in our parishes so we should support these masses and encourage our teens to keep developing their Catholic faith!

I think it’s great you volunteer all the time you do with youth. I’m sorry I hadn’t read the entire thread to see you had. God bless you. I know it can be a bit disconcerting but that’s good you won’t lose sleep. I have previously lost sleep over some things. Not worth it.

Makes sense to me. It’s not exactly that the pews are filled in parishes even at other Masses. I don’t know the exact percentage but not a high percentage of baptized Catholics attend Mass at least from what I’ve read.
 
I think I like them, in theory :p. There probably are many Life Teen Masses that are conducted in a way that provides a good catechism to the teens in attendance. Nothing wrong with providing a type of worship that may appeal more to some teens :).

The only problem I have is based on what my brother’s seen at one of the parishes near us. It seems that the service is more about entertainment and being ‘relevant’ than anything else. As an example, the Life Teen Mass (at 5pm Sunday) is always cancelled every Super Bowl Sunday because it’s just assumed that no one will attend. I don’t blame the Life Teen Mass itself for this, it’s a lack of leadership from that parish (in my opinion, anyway).

I have no personal experience with Life Teen Masses; the type of music, and general atmosphere doesn’t appeal to me. But, hey, the Melkite parish I’ve been attending may not appeal to everyone either :). As long as the Mass is properly conducted, to each his own.

I still remember at one of the parishes I’ve previously attended, there is a contemporary mens choir with keyboard only, that performs at the mid morning Sunday Mass. Not a “teen Mass”. And when I was there for Easter once they sang “Shout to the Lord” which was so uplifting. After Mass people actually stood and applauded. Maybe some applauding were just “C&E” Catholics though. I love each and every version of the Mass as the celebration that it truly is. But I just can’t stand it when people applaud-- as if it were a performance, :eek:

I don’t mean to offend, that’s just how I feel about it.

“bizarre antics” haha. I’ve never seen any bizarre antics at our parish.

That song sounds beautiful. I’ll have to look it up. I don’t normally care for modern Christian music.

I’ve never seen any ‘bizarre antics’ either. We occasionally attend the LT Mass at a nearby parish. Many families do. Its not all that different from the usual Masses we attend. Just with more youth involved in the readings/music.

Yeah, I don’t like it when that happens either. It happens at the end of Mass some times at my church, but at least they wait until the Mass is over. They aren’t life teen masses though…

I think it is more meaningful to take the time after Mass (as you suggest) to go and personally thank the party involved.

This is not a good thing. Applauding for a choir or a band means the band performed at mass and it’s not a stage to show off our talents

That is the issue I’ve had when we occasionally went to LifeTeen masses, it’s focus was to engage and entertain teens by making the mass more relevant to them. The youth minsters explained how it was great to “enliven” the mass and make it more “engaging” (read not boring). A couple times father had to remind the kids that they were not at a concert when they clapped and hooted after the band had played a set… err… a hymn.

It is quite beautiful. And yes ours isn’t that much different either. The teens do the readings and the music is more contemporary. They also are involved in ushering. That’s about it.

Yes not everyone of course but a number of people did. I figure booing would have been worse and more offensive. I looked at this way. Maybe the music was so inspiring and spoke to them and touched their hearts in such a way like they had never before experienced in a Catholic Church. Maybe some of them came back. I don’t see where that’s bad thing. I’m not offended. It’s ok for you to feel about it as you feel. We can’t always help how we feel. Peace.

I’ve never attended a Life Teen Mass but have attended Masses in the past geared more towards college students & young working adults (generally most attendees were ages 18-35). The ones I attended were reverently done with participation in the choir, the ushering, lectoring and EMHC’s done by volunteers.

To be honest, from what I’ve read about Life Teen Masses, I would not go to them. But then again, perhaps the music and format of the homily draw in the teens. Truthfully, the teens should be going more often to a regular Mass with their parents & family anyways.
