What Are Your Hobbies?

Great question!

My hobby is reading scientific research on statistics and optimization, and I really love it. Sometimes, I would do this until midnight and this happens maybe twice or three times a month. However, I always go to bed when my wives goes to bed.

How much time do you spend on your hobby?
30 minutes a day to say 12-15 hours a day?

AWESOME! good for you!

I too am a runner, I got into it 7 or so years ago after I finished college, I needed a goal to accomplish, so I wanted to run a marathon. Putting on a pair of running shoes was one of the best decisions of my life! I still haven’t run a marathon though, but ask me about 5ks and I’ll have some stories to tell.

I’m also really into Crossfit (look into it if you don’t know about it) and juggling! I’m really trying to get up to 5 balls :D. A strange combination, I know… I also go through phases of playing the piano really intensely and photography, but those do not come as easily habit-wise as my others do.
I’ve just youtube’d crossfit, looks intense but I’ll give it a go - I keep reading I need to do exercise to strengthen my core for running, so you might have just motivated me to do that!

At some stage on my chequered and hazardous journey what were my hobbies became first my healing then my lifestyle.

Decades ago when still teaching I said one day that I could do with 3 months off to catch up with all my knitting and sewing and BEHOLD! Very soon after fell prey to this dastardly illness that persists even now.

And the things I loved doing became both lifesavers and a little in livelihood then simply a way of life…

Knitting! Always at it. Started for "charity"then the aran export industry, which paid peanuts and is slave labour ///NOW I knit for sale etc.,wild variety of imaginative work…
Gardening; when I lived on the island I lived self sufficiency so grew most of my food, still lve it but have not had much time or strength of late. HOPEFULLY that wil change when I move house end of year … cooking; used to bake sll my bread etc but that got set aside too… reading, a real support in long nights… Nothing religious or educational…just now a whole integrated life… oh and I LOVE driving here in the beauty. Painless motion… shopping! After housebound decades always a delight. cats… now all rescues…

I play a few instruments.
I also do embroidery, especially counted cross-stitch.
I used to build and decorate doll’s houses but I ran out of room for that hobby.

Actually, I think the hobby I spend the most time on if photographing my family and making Shutterfly books. I used to make a photobook every year, but I keep having babies and they’re really cute. Shutterfly only allows something like 130 pages in a book, so last year our photobook had THREE volumes. I promised my husband that I would tone it down to just one book this year but I already know I’m not going to be able to keep that promise.
I also like embroidery, crochet, cooking and baking.

That with gardening and reading makes me a homebody.

I used to really like writing. I used to write loads of short stories in notebooks. And then when I was 8, I would type it on Microsoft word 😊 I would write essays for fun. (And store them in floppy disks! Anyone remembers them?)

I kind of stopped though, someone brought up that from where I came from, only people would care about American/British books. I also realized that while I tend to have a flair for writing, I wasn’t as good as I thought I was. (I mean I was writing a novel and sincerely thought I was going to publish it soon…I was 11.)

That was my only real hobby, to be honest. I’m hobby-less at the moment, unless you think watching Netflix is a hobby 🙂

I wish I have one! I’m not good at anything!!

If I could choose a hobby though, I would want to do painting/writing/playing sports. 🙂

A friend of mine invited me to go paintballing. Let me ask you, do those balls hurt? I am not a fan of pain LOL 😊
**It stings and can leave a bruise if you get hit on exposed skin.

When playing, you’ll be wearing a protective facemask that will shield your eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Getting hit there will not hurt at all.

My advice for protecting the rest of yourself is to wear a long sleeve sweatshirt and long pants. Preferably jeans of some kind. There are also neck protectors that are on the market that will definitely protect that part of your body. Some people also like to wear gloves.**

I wear long pants and a t-shirt in the summer, and a sweatshirt in the fall/spring.

I would have to say that the worst “injury” I ever sustained actually occurred my last time out (I’ve been playing since 2003). I was wearing only a t-shirt to protect my upper-body, and I was lying down in the prone position shooting at some other players that had found some excellent tree cover. One of them hit me right on the right shoulder and it hurt BAD… It hurt, but I didn’t know if I was out or not. A player is only “out” if the paintball breaks open and splatters, and I couldn’t tell if that had happened or not. If the ball hits you and does not break, you are NOT out. So I yelled for the referee to do a “paint-check” on me and tell me if I was out or not. The ref ran over (the other team isn’t allowed to shoot at you while the ref is checking you), said I was clean, and signaled for us to resume. Three seconds later another paintball struck me in the exact same spot as the first one and my entire right arm went completely NUMB! The paintball had broken and I was out. My arm felt better the next day.

My wife who had never played before had the same concerns and loved it. She’s a cantor at our parish and used one of those neck protectors I spoke of.

If you woke me up at 2am and said we were leaving to play paintball, I’d be ready to play in 10 mins. Its that much fun, and 99.99% of the time you forget about getting hit 5 seconds after it happens.

I used to cross-stitch and play guitar, but I can’t anymore. 😦 But I still sing, write, keep a few houseplants, and grow tomatoes and leaf lettuce in season. 🙂

My dh and I go weekend camping. We didn’t want to spend a fortune on a trailer and the small ones available were either too costly or didn’t fit our needs. So, we converted a 5’ x 10’ cargo trailer into a camper. We had some things installed by the manufacturer, but we put in our own counter, storage, fold out bed/bench, and bought a camping cooler with a front door and even installed a small AC unit. It suits us just fine. We camp two or three times a season and find it just enough to get away from it all over a few weekends.

We also collect DVDs. We’ve got two bookcases filled with them–we’re movie freaks, especially action, sci-fi, and classic films–whatever we like. We buy them on sale and look for bargains. Watching a great film of an evening is our way of relaxing from the cares of the day.

Reading, crochet and aquaria

I will read just about anything but I tend to prefer “the classics”.

I mainly crochet for my family and gifts but have also done some commissioned items recently. I have been crocheting since I was a young girl when my mother taught me. Crocheting used to be my “dirty little secret” when I was younger, especially in college, but now I am out and proud. I spend way too much money on yarn and have decided to upgrade my crochet hooks so I don’t end up with hand or wrist issues.

I currently have two tanks - one with cichlids and the other with two turtles. I want to get rid of the turtles because the water has become difficult to maintain. Plus, they are extremely vicious and have slaughtered every fish that has ever lived in that tank.

Ukulele playing.
Consuming frozen beverages by pools and on the beach.

Hobbies:

Writing and recording religious music.

Smoking cigars.

Drinking scotch.

Following the Red Sox and Patriots.

I often combine the last three. LOL

I’m fortunate (I think!) that my hobbies and my job are one and the same–writing and music. Other things I like are hiking, learning languages, and reading, but I’m not sure if those really rise to the level of ‘hobby.’ They’re just things I do.

I should make this a hobby. 😃

(Actually, DH and I started a “Sunday afternoon happy hour” at home and it’s lovely. We try different cocktails and relax out on the back porch while the kids play. Not quite seaside, but very nice all the same.)

I have a strange hobby, I dress up as a Star Wars character for fundraising, hospital visits, etc. It’s fun and rewarding. For anyone interested in joining it’s a worldwide group of volunteers, 501st.com.
I’m also thinking of getting back into Crossfit (I noticed someone mentioned that).

Met a wonderful bear once like that!!! WELL DONE

I write, mainly on my blog. I take incidents from my life, either serious or humorous ones, and show what I learned about my Catholic faith from them.

I’ve written about everything from my husband talking in his sleep (He thought I’d turned into a turtle!) to what happened when a gumball machine stole my money. Lately I’ve written about how a disc jockey friend played an April Fool’s Day prank on our community and also about what happened when my Catholic elementary school banned the girls from playing on the jungle gym.

My most popular posts so far are “A Lesson at the Library” which shows what I learned from my two-year-old and “Your Anti-Catholic Guide” a toungue-in-cheek guide for attacking the Church.

If you’d like to take a look, just click on the link in my signature below. 🙂

Thanks for the link. I’ll check out your blog.

DH and I both do genealogy. It’s amazing how one couple can be responsible for so many people.

I enjoy fishing/boating/outdoor. My uncle has a cabin on the river and my brothers and I spent a lot of time with our cousins up there. DH and I lease a place a few cabins from his.

I like to shop at thrift stores.

I like to play tennis, and help the kids with crafts and art.
I read too.

My favorite activity is to learn new things, and try new them too,so some hobbies vary according to what I am learning about at the time.
