What are your liturgical plans for the Easter Triduum?

Well, I got to Mass each day this week including last evening. The parish is a Jesuit run parish, and all seven of the Fathers were celebrating the liturgy. No foot washing. The procession to the tabernacle of repose was beautiful, with the Pange Lingua chanted in Latin. Even though the Mass of the Lord’s Supper was celebrated in the Ordinary Form, before Mass the pastor came to the pulpit, and informed the congregation of exactly what was going to happen in the procession, had us sing a verse of the Pange Lingua for practice, and urged those of us of a certain age to rack our brains for the correct Latin pronunciations. And they must use a better grade of incense, I wasn’t sneezing my head off!

This parish generally has daily Eucharistic Adoration all afternoon, and I get there several days during the week normally after work. I have to admit, it was a bit of a shock (even though I knew ahead of time) not to see the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance on the altar when I went into the church.

After Mass I tried to get to six more churches for brief periods of prayer and meditation. I have an approximately thirty five mile route from that church to home.

One church near the Jesuit church is the oldest church in my diocese. Believe it or not, I’d never been there before. They had also had a five o clock Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the altar had already been stripped, and the choir was practicing. This parish has a lot of parishioners that are very involved in their parish, and they had greeters passing out small printed meditation aids. The church is Gothic in style. I truly don’t know what was more breathtaking–the architecture or the sound of the choir, and I intend to get there for Mass some day this summer.

Next stop was a church where some of my mother’s relatives were parishioners early in the twentieth century. Volunteers were setting up for a later evening Mass. I said a decade of the rosary there and left, off in search of church # 4.

Because it’s near several exits of the freeway and in an area with several one-way streets, I couldn’t figure out how to get into the parking lot of the cathedral. I wasn’t about to park illegally either, because police headquarters is next to the cathedral! I thought Jesus would prefer that I make a financial offering to the Church rather than pay a parking ticket fine! So I added a church a block away from the college I recently graduated from, which took me a few miles off route. I’ll have to study Google maps before Saturday evening; I plan to go to Easter vigil there.

The churches I had identified as numbers 5 and 6 all had Mass in progress. I didn’t want to disrupt Mass by a ten minute visit, so I went to my home parish, where Mass had already ended, and then backtracked to those churches.

This was the first time I’d done a “road trip” style seven church visit on Holy Thursday. When I was living in New York City, the seven church visitation could be accomplished on foot!

If you’ve never done so, I urge you to consider next year doing the seven church visit devotion. It’s meditative, and additionally, it’s a great way to see some churches that are real gems of your diocese!

This morning I went to Confession at the parish by my house. I was expecting to have to walk 1 1/2 miles to the church because my husband took my car because he couldn’t find his keys this morning to go to work. But then I found them, so I had his car. Thank God, I did not want to walk, the road has no shoulder or sidewalk and I was scared.

I’m happy to say there were a lot of people in the church praying and going to Confession.

Because of work I didn’t make it to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper but after work was done DH picked me up and drove me to the church where I was able to spend some time in adoration.

This afternoon I will head to the church early to help with last minute preparations. I’m hoping that Fr. Administrator will show up a bit early so that I can go to confession (he was sick this week so there was not available at all for confession). I’ll be the narrator for the reading of the Passion.

I had a great Holy Thursday Mass. It was in the Ordinary Form, but there was incense, Latin chanted Pange Lingua, and nine or ten altar boys. All of the priests of the parish concelebrated. Father had trouble getting the ciborium to fit in the place prepared for it on the altar of repose.

The Holy Thursday Mass might be my personal favorite of the entire Triduum.

I may be going to a Tenebrae service tonight at a local parish. I’ve never been to one, so this will be an experience.

I’m very frustrated that I’ve been sick this week. I was up much of the night last night holding a bowl in front of my mouth, I’m hoping I feel better for Easter Vigil. I was really sick at Christmas too and missed midnight mass. This has not been a good year for me I guess 😦

I am sorry, Cider. I have prayed for you, and will more, and for the intercession of St. Perigrine.

Oh no, I hope you feel better.

I went to my first Good Friday service today and it was very nice. I have never seen the church so packed. I got there 20 minutes early and got one of the last seats. I had to park on the street. I guess that’s what happens when there is only one service and a 4,770 member parish!

I got teary eyed during the prostration of the priests, deacons, and altar servers at the beginning. It was very moving.

There was no incense, but we had I believe every single altar server participating.

I did not realize the service was 2 hours long! Next time I will eat my meal beforehand. I had not eaten anything and felt almost sick during all of the kneeling.

There was a lot of singing as the veneration and Communion took a while because of all the people. I Am the Bread of Life, Behold the Lamb of God, Revelation Song, Above All, Hosanna, and Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?

I enjoyed all except Hosanna, not so much. Didn’t care for the guitar solo in the recording .___.

I’m following my normal Tridium tradition, basically living at church. Obviously I don’t actually do this, but between all my deocrating (4 different designs over an 8 day period) and going to all the Masses, I spend a good number of hours up there.

I had to read the first reading, the voice for the Passion, and carry the cross for adoration at the Good Friday service. Afterwards, I helped another person strip the altars.

I then had to go back to do Stations of the Cross, and then after Stations we started to decorate the church for Easter. I had to go around with a ladder and unveil all the statues/images. It was actually my first year doing that, and it’s sort of fun. Tomorrow I have to go for Morning Prayer, and then we are putting all the stuff that belongs in the sanctuary back. We have to move all the chairs, kneelers, candles and candle sticks, credence table, etc. back to their places and then arrange the flowers around the sanctuary. It should be interesting.

Tomorrow night I will be reading at the Vigil, and then Easter Sunday morning I will be serving at the early Mass and then going back for the late morning Mass.
