My mother is more independent and outspoken at 73 than she ever was before. My father passed away 10 years ago which threw her into learning how to do many things on her own. She has more lunch dates in a week (with only female friends- she doesn’t want to be “bogged down with some old man’s problems”) than I have in 3 months and is always making plans with girlfriends. She went to Europe two years ago and Italy this year.
One thing I have noticed is that she no longer cares who hears what she says. For instance, we were at a hospital waiting area and I, uh, well, burped, and I was taking some nasty pre-natal vitamins at the time that caused an awful burp smell (think rotten cheerios.) An old man stood up when his name was called at the same time, and my mom said, loud enough for everyone to hear her, “Oh My Gosh, does that man stink or what?”
