What Are Your Plans For Christmas Eve And Christmas Day?

Christmas Day is almost over for me, it is 9pm here.

This year it is just DH, our 2 children and I. We got up in the morning and went to mass at 10am. After that we went to a restaurant for lunch. Then we went home and the children had a nap. I put all the gifts around the Christmas tree and after they woke up we opened them. It was so fun to watch them rip the paper and get all excited about the things they got. We listened to Christmas carols and just spent time together the rest of the afternoon. The kids are now in bed and DH and I will relax for a couple of hours and go to sleep. We have to get up early because we are going to the beach tomorrow 😃

I went to Midnight Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. My first time in that church. It was a lovely Mass, celebrated by the Archbishop, and he granted us an Apostolic Blessing (which carries with it the opportunity for a plenary indulgence) at the end. It was long, though - an hour and 45 minutes. I didn’t get back to my mom’s house until almost 2:30, and it was almost 3 when I climbed into bed.

Today, my mom’s brother and his wife are coming over for Christmas dinner.
 
Visited family on Christmas Eve and got to go to my first Christmas Day Mass this morning. i admit i got a little teary eyed this morning during the Eucharist (still on the outside looking through the window) 😦
 
It’s nearly 0400, 26 December. Another long day. Morning rounds early. Rather nice service, where I got to sing outloud. Heheh. Check in on a couple patients. Worked in the mess to serve Xmas meal to enlisted who work much harder than I do, and who take much greater risk. A Belgian unit showed up. We were the closest medical facility. Severely burned 12 year old male Afghani more than 50% of his body. Taking care of him through the night. Put his family up. Need to figure out what to do with them. Frustrated with lack of resources for burn care. Skyped my mom. Postponed my other call plans. Going to sleep for a couple hours now.
 
Christmas Eve- Rush around to get last minute details taken care of before Christmas day dinner we’re hosting. I had to pick up a few small things like aluminum foil and furniture polish.
Clean the house, make some side dishes ahead of schedule and get the dinning room situated.
Head out to 6:30 pm mass.
Pick up Chinese, put the kiddo to bed, light a fire and watch The Nativity Story (our Christmas eve tradition after Mass).

Christmas Day- Open presents, cook, host family gathering of 10 people with a big dinner. Open presents.

It’s been a long day. Not a bad one…except that I threw my back out early today picking up my LO and it’s been killing me all day long.
Dinner was a hit though and now I’m staring at a living room that looks like a tornado of toys and wrapping paper and a table that needs clearing.

I’m glad my sister and BIL will be hosting next year! 😛

Each year my increasingly secularized family attends Mass at our local parish on Christmas Eve. Due to an influx of C/E Catholics, we usually end up sitting with 100-200 other parishioners in the Social Hall, watching Mass on a projector. After a seemingly contemporary Mass (Thank God for the Eucharist!), we head back home to have Dinner, read the Nativity Story in the Gospel of Luke, read Charlie Brown’s Christmas, open presents, and then head to bed.

A new tradition founded this year? 9:15am Mass by myself Christmas Morning. Given the Modernized Mass on the day prior, I feel that, in order to have adequate time to pray & reflect on Jesus’ birth, I must do as Jesus did & go off in solitude to pray — even if that is with the whole 9:15am crowd.

Christmas Day is typically the day in which we lounge around, go to a movie, and have a Brunch. I recognize that there’s room for more devotion to the Lord, so here’s to hoping the family follows in their youngest sons footsteps. :gopray2:

My older son and I did 2 Masses on Christmas Eve last year - one at 5 pm, and one at 11 pm because we had such a bad taste in our mouths after the 5 pm Mass that we simply needed some reverence as our last experience of that holy night.

I seriously considered going by myself on Christmas Day this year - not because the Christmas Eve midnight Mass wasn’t reverent, but we’ve gone to Mass on Christmas Eve for years now, and there is no longer a reason to do so. We don’t do much on the day itself, and our sons are 21 and 19, so they can manage a Mass on Christmas day. We started going on the eve to avoid the daytime crowds and hoopla and because my husband doesn’t want to dress up and go to church on Christmas day. He would rather not go at all, so I guess I should be thankful.

Anyway, next year, I’m going on Christmas day itself, even if that means getting up before 8 am and going to the early Mass.
