What are your thoughts on John Hagee?

That’s the problem when dispensationalists try to find their theology in scripture: if they do it in a passionate but misguided way, they say stuff that I don’t think they realize is deeply heretical. I’m reminded of one Jack van Impe Presents where van Impe was trying to justify his opinion and said, “The Jews are the chosen people of Yahweh, and the Christians are the chosen people of Jesus.”

My immediate thought was, “Wow, didn’t the Marcionists believe that? Weren’t they known as heretics?”

They will say crazy things, indeed, to justify themselves. They seem to focus so much on the Jews, these days.

The Jews were once the chosen people, but now it is not this way. The true sons of Abraham are all people who believe.

I have been watching John Hagee’s sermons for a while now, out of mere curiousity. Sadly, he, when in contrast to Catholic Homily, does not focus on God nor the Gospel, but on Revelation (as see with his giant charts of Revelation and Raptures) as well as Daniel. As well as Jack Van Impe and the show “Tomorrow’s World”, which focus only on end times theology, purporting heresies such as “you can interpret bible prophecy!..but first, we’d like for you to have this “free” gift!”.

But back to the original topic, John Hagee is, although Christian, one who does not preach sound theology and primarily fuels the end times frenzy.

I am not sure if any of you here have seen Pastor John Hagee from San Antonio,TX on TBN? I believe he is a fundamentalist? The guy seems to preach a lot of gloom & doom-fire and brimstone. I noticed he does like to take cheap shots at Obama and the U.N. I have yet to hear him actually preach the Gospel of Jesus and less of the Gospel According to John Hagee.

Any comments?

If he weren’t, he would not have backed down from his Rome bashing when McCain rejected his endorsement in '08.

I do not like Him after he put Cathloics down,and I do not read His books,I think His books are just to make money…He is one step about Benny Hinn and the other guy from TX

Hagee is mainly involved in pro-Israel stuff. He is an effective rapid-fire preacher, citing one Bible verse after another, focusing particularly upon Revelation and the ‘last days’. For those who are ill-informed, he can be very convincing. I personally believe he is way off base, but his staunch, fervent defense of everything Israeli has won him praise (and an award or two?) from Jewish organizations. He has an annual gathering in DC at which a number of leading politicians always speak.

As has been pointed out, he once preached strong anti-Catholicism. John McCain first accepted his endorsement in 2008, but then backed away when he learned how anti-Catholic Hagee had been. Then Hagee changed his tune, eager, of course, to maintain his political clout. 

 Frankly, I put no credibility in Hagee. Maybe he is very sincere, but I do wonder sometimes if he has a good thing going. I've read that he has a luxurious lifestyle, though I haven't researched that myself.

 He should not be confused with Joel Osteen. They preach a very different message and in a very different style. Osteen is more like a Norman Vincent Peale or a Robert Schuller - positive thinking, faith leading to self-confidence, etc. He uses the Bible but not in the way that Hagee does. Hagee is all wrapped up in prophesy, about the rapture, how an army from the north will attack Israel, how Jesus will return and lead the forces of righteousness in the final battle of Armageddon, etc. Hagee has great ability to paint a dramatic (and often bloody) picture of things to come. It disturbs me that so many hungry souls eat up what he says as 'gospel truth'.

Osteen is more like a Norman Vincent Peale or a Robert Schuller - positive thinking, faith leading to self-confidence, etc. He uses the Bible but not in the way that Hagee does. Hagee is all wrapped up in prophesy, about the rapture, how an army from the north will attack Israel, how Jesus will return and lead the forces of righteousness in the final battle of Armageddon, etc. Hagee has great ability to paint a dramatic (and often bloody) picture of things to come. Osteen is a lot like the Emergent/Emerging Church guys - he’s all about the better life now, and that God wants you happy now. Very minimal discussion on the afterlife, let alone eternal life through Christ and…you know…important gospel stuff like that. Hagee on the other hand focuses on what happens between this world and the afterlife, like you said.

As for hungry souls eating this up…well, it explains 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 quite nicely.

Of course he is going to live a luxurious life-style with all the books he sells on gloom and doom many of his followers believe.

Anti-Catholic “Bigot” that John McCain made the BIG mistake of associating with during the 2008 campaign. When his odious statements about the Church were unearthed in print and Tv, McCain VERY quickly distanced from the man. Anything else?

Osteen focuses mainly on God. I agree with you he rarely mentions Jesus. He IS very “Prosperity Gospel” and overall a very “vanilla” motivator.

You can see the problem with his theology when he’s interviewed by the secular media. I’m sorry, but he’s weak. He gets asked hard questions and he can’t answer. You can make a drinking game out of how many times he responds to a question with, “I don’t know.”

What it boils down to is he’s a motivational speaker who inserts “God” into his sentences every now and then. That’s not good preaching and it isn’t the gospel.
