What does the bible say about slavery?
Read the book of Philemon to see how St. Paul treats a slave named Onesimus that had run away from his master named Philemon. The whole letter is exhorting Philemon to receive Onesimus in love and forgiveness and to receive him as he would receive Paul himself despite the fact that Onesimus was considered a slave and a slave that had run away and stolen money. Paul considered Onesimus to be an equal in Christ even though it went against the prevailing culture of that time to consider slaves as equals.
What can we do about slavery?
- Sexual slavery - young people are sold into slavery for the sex trade every day all around the world, this includes the US. (slavery around the world)
- Poor people unable to pay their debts are sold into slavery to pay their debt but are never able to pay it because of high interest rates forcing them and all their further generations into slavery.
- Forced labor where people are lured with the promise of a good job but then are subject to slaving conditions like working without payment or physical abuse.
- Chattel slavery - like traditional slavery and is typically based on race. A ‘lesser’ race is forced to be slaves for another race.

What can we do about slavery?
- Donate to organizations that help free slaves and care for them and their families.
- Raise awareness to others that the problem is real and they need our help.
- We can buy free trade merchandise. That is merchandise where slave labor was not used to make the products.
- Pray for slaves that God would free them like he freed the Jews from the Egyptians.
- Become more active - join an organization that helps free slaves.
