What are your thoughts on The New Yorker Thanksgiving Cover?

The idea behind the illustration isn’t very original. The illustration itself is kind of meh.

I’m not sure which way is supposed to be north in this picture, but I assume it’s an attempt to gain sympathy for illegal immigration by comparing it to early immigration to the New World. It’s a bad analogy.

Illegal aliens may be fleeing the mismanagement of a country with a lot of natural resources and elements of a culture that can’t seem to get it together. They may be fleeing undrinkable tap water. They may be fleeing a lot of things, but religious persecution is not one of them.

Under the Obama economy, it isn’t even possible to make the jobs argument, since Mexico’s unemployment rate is currently 5.26% while the US rate has been no better than 9% in the last six months. Worse yet, it is obvious the artist has never been out of his elitist New York circle and anywhere near the border. He thinks there is a bunch of high security fence out there somewhere that must be penetrated while there are still hundreds of miles of holes.

Oh, well.

Here I disagree. The artist needed something in the picture to show that it was a border. If it was just some Pilgrim Fathers running across a piece of desert, then the point about immigration would have been lost. A fence, or an abandoned border post or something was necessary to show the existence of a border that was being crossed.

lol yeah you totally missed the analogy. the motives and driving circumstances are obviously not identical.

“Coming to an inhabited place you have zero previous claim to” vs “Coming back to a place your ancestors were driven out of”, for instance

Also its not a north/south depiction…its in/out (Pilgrims scrambling to get in)

The point the piece aims to make is simply that the colonists came without prior permission of the people who already lived here, thus making them the first illegal immigrants.

The fences are symbolic lol…the artist has to visually represent lack of permission and efforts to “keep out” in a simple and succinct manner.

As for “getting it together”, no such subject can truly be discussed without acknowledging historical ingredients such as the fact that America did violently take 60% of Mexico’s mineral wealth when Mexico decided to outlaw slavery.
