I would also be interested in a place that has a great Catholic community, large families, either good schools or large homeschooling community. We are in Oregon and the jobs here are scarce and low paying but cost of living is high.

PS, DH is self taught no degree but does have Microsoft cert.s

Thanks

You’re not far from the Seattle/Tacoma–an area full of high tech jobs. Have no idea what the home schooling environment is like…is this a possibility?

Plus no state income tax in WA. 🙂

Just sales tax…😦

It’s give and take.

I think I would prefer a smaller town with high values. Seattle is expensive to live too, isn’t it?

Yes Seattle is expensive to live (lived there for several years) but Microsoft does pay VERY well and their benefits package is AWESOME! (My exhubby worked for them for 12 years).
Their reiligous enviroment is so-so. Some areas are better than others…or at least this was our experience when we lived there…perhaps it is better now!!!

Maryland has the 3rd highest wages in the country. Our cost of living is also high, but not as high as states with comparable wages.

I’m not sure what “high tech” job your DH is looking for…but have you looked at Huntsville Alabama…yes, Alabama. The cost of living is low and there are a lot of research parks, Nasa, Space Center, etc in the area. Also, there is the Redstone Arsenal which supports most of the defense supplies for the government.

Something to look into.

Housing prices are out of control here. BUT, we’ve found the people to be very open, warm, laid back and unpretentious. Our kids mixed in easily and have made many friends. As far as religion goes…it’s pretty “west coast” not a lot of embracing of highly conservative, ritualized or traditional faith practice. However, the Catholics here have a kind of “aliens in a a foreign land” mentality and are quite devoted to their parishes and developing a Catholic community/fellowship with each other.

The kind of work your dh does (and mine too) is no longer needed. A Microsoft certificate means nothing these days, which is why he cannot find work. He should get training in the computer side of telecommunications, which is what my dh is doing. There’s a great need for people in that field. I forget the name for this position, but when I next talk to my dh sometime today, I’ll let you know exactly what it is. You see now days, computers come with programs on them already. And if companies need new programs, it is cheaper and easier for them to buy the latest model for $1,000 rather than pay an employee $45,000 per year to upgrade their old systems.

DC metro area has lots of jobs and good salaries to accompany the high cost of living. Of course, it’s a horrible place to live, but…

And you could take the kids on field trips to EWTN 🙂

I soooo agree !! Not sure about the job market in your DH’s field… but Alabama is so beautiful and the cost of housing is so cheap !! Alot of house for your $. Plus the people are so very sweet… and this is my favorite part… you can go out into your backyard and pick pecans right off the ground… how cool is that?

Wow, all those high tech jobs right in Alabama. That is really something to consider. Thanks for the info, DJ.

We have everything you asked about here except for alot of job opportunities. I am Director of Information Technology at my company, and I can tell you that there are some jobs, but not enough to make a move here at the moment. The Catholic Schools are great here, and you can’t beat the midwest small town values! I would advise your hubby to look into The High School of St Thomas More in Champaign IL as they were looking for an IT person and I couldn’t convince my son to apply because he was afraid they wouldn’t hire him because he went to that school (and needless to say he was a bit rowdy, but he did take care of their network when he went there. They were totally lost when he left the school). Anyway, sorry, that’s the best I can do, and if you do end up out this way…Look me up!!!

Carol Marie, CatholicSam and PA…yes, Alabama is beautiful, especially the northern part. EWTN is about 2 hour drive from Huntsville.

As for cost of living… we built our 2500 sq ft home for 90,000 eight years ago. It would probably cost about 120,000 now, but still cheap. Property taxes are not bad if you get in the rural areas. And really, the jobs do pay well. We own our own business, but have family who work in 'high tech" areas making around 85,000 a year.

I live in a rural area…nope, do not have DSL, just sloooowwww dial up! But, a lot of people live in rural areas and commute to the larger cities.

The homeschooling laws are not bad. There are many organizations for your children to be involved in with homeschooling.

Where I live is the most beautiful Catholic Church in Alabama, IMO. When I was little I use to call it Cinderella’s castle! I live in a conservative town that was founded by German Catholics.

PM me if you would like more info!!

Only weather warnings would be tornadoes occasionally. Like it’s about 50 degrees in the daytime and about 35 at night right now.

Oh, and we have lots of cotton fields!

Buy American cotton everyone!

I have thought of the south, we have some dear friends in MS, and we almost made a move but the job we were looking at lockheed stayed internal.

I would consider the midwest, BlestOne, what you describe sounds like what we are looking for. except for the lack of jobs. I will let me dh know of the school and see what happens.

Thanks everyone!

mom26, I grew up in the Seattle area suburbs. The mainstream community up there is a bit materialistic for my liking (too much focus on wealth) and I prefer southern WA state now that I’m grown. However, there is a *wonderful *catholic community of homeschooling families quietly hidden away in the Seattle area. If you end up considering that area & you’d like more info pm me and I’ll dig up my info on those groups.

So is Alabama sweltering during the summer? Is it high humidity or dry heat? Are parishes orthodox?

Has your husband put his resume on monster.com or careerbuilder.com? Headhunters will probably approach him and if you guys have target areas (such as the midwest) then they can look all over those areas for you. The firm that brought my husband out here does contracts in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois. Maybe Nebraska and Colorado, too, but I can’t remember if that was a different firm. He was a contractor for five months and now the company is buying him as an employee. He got offers all over the country but at the time we were looking specifically for only one area. Also, YOU can contact a headhunter firm and ask for representation. Some of these cost money and some don’t, but my personal opinion is NOT to spend money–that is really a service they’re offering the company who will eventually buy your husband. Some of the firms that request money from the jobhunter can also be a little shady. Also, most firms or corporations will offer a relocation package to assist in moving to your destination. Some will also buy your house and then sell it themselves so as to make moving as easy as possible.

Just some ideas for you!

Another excellent (and probably the best for IT jobs) dice.com. It is strictly for IT professionals.
