Just finished Rising Road, by Sharon Davies. Subtitled “A True Tale of Love, Race, and Religion, in America,” it’s a book of history, not fiction, but it has the feel of a novel.

You may think there is a lot of anti-Catholicism today, but the anti-Catholicism of the 1920’s south will astonish. It was possible then to run for elective office—and win—on a purely anti-Catholic platform. It was possible to obtain an order for involuntary commitment of a child over 18 years old to an insane asylum, simply by showing that she had been ordered by her parents not to convert to Catholicism, and refused. Two physicians would easily take such refusal to return to the religion of her parents as a sign of mental unbalance—without ever examining the supposed patient.

And it was possible for a protestant minister to walk up to the porch of a rectory and shoot a priest dead. And then to mount as a defense that the priest had married his legal age daughter—to a Catholic! That was nearly a more unthinkable thing than murder itself.

The minister who had shot the priest had a powerful defense team of lawyers, led by future Supreme Court justice, Hugo Black. It was not discovered until years later that the KKK had raised money to pay for the defense. Three of the four defense lawyers for the shooter were members of the KKK. Hugo Black was not. He joined later.

A remarkable book. I recommend it.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. A great book, despite the whiners…

Just finished reading “Exorcism and The Church Militant” by Fr.Thomas Euteneuer

It was very good…I found myself re-evaluating my role in the Body of Christ. Fr. Thomas makes the point that WE are the Church Militant here on earth. The others are: “The Church Suffering” which is Purgatory and “The Church Triumphant” which is Heaven.
He brings the reader up close and personal to current day spiritual warfare. Lets you see how pervasive the evil in todays society is and how it continues to grow unchecked by the Church. He realizes the power the Church has to rid evil and states that the Church is NOT doing everything in her power to deal head on with it BUT gives clear direction to any Priest who is willing to do battle.
The part I found absolutely horrifying but so relevant was a blow by blow and day by day description of a real exorcism that he performed on a girl using the “1614 Rite of Exorcism” translated from Latin. I was amazed after reading this true story. You will be too.
He gives the reasons why most Priests shy away from exorcism and how some Priest and even Bishops don’t believe that Satan is real much less want to subscribe to this type of assault on the evil one.
This is a must read…I highly recommend it

Includes the original Latin Rite of Exorcism

Dale_M- “The Long Exile” sounds like a thought-provoking book. I’ll be sure to look for this next time I’m in a bookstore.

davidlee- Is the title of the book “The Secret of Mary” by: St. Louis de Montfort? or is it called “The Secrets of Mary: Gifts of the Blessed Mother” by: Janice T. Connell. I would really appreciate it if you told me the title of the book and the author?

basenji- “God’s doorkeeper” by: Joel Schorn sounds rather interesting and up-lifting. Another book for my “wish list”

A couple of books by Beatrix Potter

“Charlotte’s Web” by: E.B. White

Currently reading “The Screwtape Letters” by: C.S. Lewis

Just started Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. So far not seeing what the big deal is with the book.

Started *The Dispossessed *by Ursula K. Le Guin.

I just ordered; “The Rite The Making of an Exorcist Priest”

has anyone read this yet? any comments?

Currently juggling three books:

The Secret Doctrine, Volume I - Cosmogenesis by Helena Blavatsky (This one is thick, and dense; will probably be working on it for a while)

Light of the World by Benedict XVI (nice light, enjoyable read; pope really shows his brilliance and warm personality)

Cosmic Teachings of a Lama by Samael Aun Weor (also a good book; very deep and insightful)

Biblioassistant- I don’t think I would be able to read one book at a time I’ve tried this before and I just get confused. But to those who do and can good for them.

davidlee- Thank you for telling me who the author is. I don’t know what a nook is (laughs) but I will be sure to check this book out next time I go to the Catholic Book Shop.

I am currently reading “The Great Divorce” by: C.S. Lewis

Just finished Moon Over Manifest. A great read, and I highly recommend it, especially for 12 and 13 year old girls. But you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it.

Just finished Neptune’s Inferno by James Hornfischer. Excellent book covering the US Navy battles in “The Slot” during the Guadalcanal campaign.

Now reading Band of Brigands; The Extraordinary Story of the First Men in Tanks by Christy Campbell

I am reading The Jesuit Guide to (Almost)Everything by James Martin. It is a very interesting book about how we can use Jesuit spirituality in everyday life. Also because of this thread I have downloaded Rising Road by Sharon Davies on my nook reader and will start it in a day or so.

I am reading Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg, The Books of Tobit, Amos, and soon Jonah from the St. Ignatius Catholic RSV Second Edition Bible.

I kind of left the KJV Book of Exodus by the wayside as well as the Qur’an.

I did finish the Complete Dead Seas Scrolls in English and A Concise History of the Catholic Church.
