What book brought you closer to Jesus? Besides the Bible

Lately I’m realizing how much holy literature can deepen my relationship with Christ. Two books are profoundly impacting this and those are Abandonment to Divine Providence and Blessed Catherine Emmerich’s books.

Just wondering what books impacted your walk with Christ and made you love Him even more?

Hard to say which ones influenced me the most, but 2 in particular that pushed me into learning the Catholic faith better and which inspired me to grow in holiness, the stories of St. Don Bosco, and an older book my mother gave me called the heart of the gospel by Francis P. Donnelly,
I’ve read many wonderful books since then, but those two I’ve always kept a particular fondness for.
 
I was your average Catholic until I read “The Dogma of Purgatory”. It was an incredibly tough read, but worth every struggling second. Something about it motivated me, and I started reading more and more and becoming more involved. Ultimately it is what brought me closer, and while I have read a good number of amazing books since then, some better some not as great, that was the catalyst.

I strongly recommend it, however I would caution anyone as it is not a light read, nor is it exactly the easiest book to get through. Plan on at least 2 weeks to fully get it done…
 
The Imitation of Christ, Thomas a Kempis.

The Way, St. Josemarie Escriva.

Jesus, a Pilgrimage, Fr. James Martin. Currently reading, just started the resurrection chapters but so far it has been outstanding!

God and You: Prayer As a Personal Relationship, Fr. William Barry. Short, highly readable, excellent.
 
Biographies and movies about saints influenced me greatly as a child. Books about Saint Kateri Tekawitha and Saint Margaret Clitherow affected me deeply. Films about Father Damien and Mother Teresa and the film about the Shroud of Turin stuck with me into adulthood.
As an adult, books such as City of Joy, Brideshead Revisited, and Island of the World lead me to reflect on God’s goodness as does the poem God’s Grandeur by Hopkins.
 
The Diary of St. Faustina: Divine Mercy in My Soul helped… plus some saint stories…
 
Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux. The simplicity of her “little way” helped me immensely.

Two of the books I have already purchased (Holy Wisdom and The Dogma of Purgatory, very inexpensive) and they are now on my Kindle Fire. The other ones are on my Amazon wish list! Thanks!

I too was greatly influenced by that, but most profoundly by “The Lord of the Rings.” It blew me away and change my whole spiritual perspective, allowing me to explore knowing Jesus in ways I had never believed possible.

And the Father Brown stories by G. K. Chesterton made me a more forgiving, loving Catholic.
