What book brought you closer to Jesus? Besides the Bible

Abandonment to Divine Providence also helped me, but not nearly as much as True Devotion to Mary (by St. Louis) and The Glories of Mary (by St. Alphonsus), and the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin (by St. Bonaventure).

As St. Germanus says–quoted in the Glories of Mary–“just as the body cannot live without breathing, so the soul cannot live without having recourse to Mary”.

Mary is the whole key to loving Jesus.

That is why her most-holy name is the breath of our soul.

One of my pastors used to sit in the same seat every day, praying. One day when he was not around, I sat in “his seat” to see what he saw from that angle. And I found that he had a small library that he maintained in “his seat”. So I began to copy down the book titles. This was the first of the book titles that I jotted down.
 
To Know Christ Jesus by Frank Sheed … the best book that I was ever inspired by and by reading I realized how close I was to Jesus.

I was your average Catholic until I read “The Dogma of Purgatory”. It was an incredibly tough read, but worth every struggling second. Something about it motivated me, and I started reading more and more and becoming more involved. Ultimately it is what brought me closer, and while I have read a good number of amazing books since then, some better some not as great, that was the catalyst.

I strongly recommend it, however I would caution anyone as it is not a light read, nor is it exactly the easiest book to get through. Plan on at least 2 weeks to fully get it done…

Yes, it’s truly an amazing book. In it,Therese calls out The Imitation of Christ as being very important to her as well.
 
The Imitation of Christ was a must read and multiple re-reads for me, but I have learned that silent listening prayer is the best form of worship ever!
