Hawthorne comes to mind-his stuff is great! Scarlet Letter, The Great Carbuncle, Young Goodman Browne, those are some classics!

Hope it goes well! Keep on reading!

Sci Fi: Cordwainer Smith: The Rediscovery of Man. This might be tough to find since Smith is not widely known anymore. The R of M is a collection of some of the most memorable short stories in the genre.

Catholic: James Martin: My Life with the Saints

Novel: Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. Perhaps the funniest book about serious things ever.

I don’t know if you like the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre but if so here is a list of musts:

Fantasy:
Lord of the Ring: J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hobbit: J.R.R. Tolkien
Song of Ice and Fire Series (Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings,Storm of Swords, Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons [out 9/30/09] by George R. R. Martin)
All of David Eddings books.
Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist
Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson

Science Fiction:
Ringworld series by Larry Niven
Dune by Frank Herbert
Star Ship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. (Actually, any of Heinlein’s books)

Mainline Fiction:
Any Jack Reacher book by Lee Child
Any book by Douglas Preston
Any book by Lincoln Child
All of the books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (they write together as well as seperately)
All of Harlan Coben’s mysteries
Shogun by James Clavell

That’s it off the top of my head.

If you enjoy History, all of the Oxford Series of American History are well worth the read. Save your money too, nearly every library has them.

Also, try some of Fr. Stephen Rossetti’s books, either “Joy of the Priesthood” or “I am awake, discovering prayer”. Both very good, honest reads.
