What books would you recommend about the lives of Saints

A book on each Saint of interest. I like St. Gertrude and St. Patrick myself. However the list is a long one for me. I have found that compendiums are just too brief for me.
 
I took a look through “Voices of the Saints: A 365-Day Journey with Our Spiritual Companions” by Bert Ghezzi last night.

The saints and Doctors of the Church are arranged throughout the book by the dates of their lives (which is very helpful to me, I can mentally put them into the century they lived).
Plus, it’s quite surprising how ancient some of our honored saints are.

I read the 2 pages last night on St. Ignatius of Loyola. Ghezzi explained his life and order and then mentioned the book that he is most known for.

“Voices” has an extensive source and reference list in the back and it has an alphabetical page listing to locate each saint. It also contains the monthly and daily Liturgical remembrance list on the saints.

One other very nice feature in “Voices” is that Ghezzi has multiple pages where he has categorized the saints under themes. For example some of the themes listed include:

Missionaries
Perserverence
Purpose
Prophets
Saints of the Bible
Saints and Sacraments
Serving the Poor
 
Little Flowers of St. Francis
The Life of St. Francis by St. Bonaventure
The Life of St. Anthony of the Desert by St. Athanasius
 
There is probably no more exciting book about a Saint than Regine Pernoud’s “Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witnesses”

Pernoud uses plenty of quote from contemporary records to let the record “speak for itself” and there is plenty of information about Joan. She is probably better known than any historical figure up to her time.

There are tons of information in this book, unlike other Joan books which don’t even mention some of her battles or other background information, being too busy with the author’s agenda. Pernoud just tells the complete story as revealed by the historical records.
She did a good job.
 
A Man for Others by Patricia Treece about St. Maximillian Kolbe.

His large collection of the lives of the saints for every day of the year is a great book. I’ve read about three or four of those kinds of volumes and his is the best. He’s a great writer with excellent scholarship.
