I’m trying to put together a list of books for an ex-catholic (now is a JW) that explain the true teachings of the Catholic Church.

I started my list with the Cathechism of the Catholic Church.

Thanks.

Ummm–why bother? They won’t read them. (Found that out with a Seventh Day Adventist. And yes, I was a bit shocked.)

As to why I would say that Jehovah Witnesses would not read Catholic books because of my experience with a SDA member (and also with LDS members), well the JWs, SDAs, and LDS are restoration churches. And as such, they have the 18th century belief that the Catholic Church went totally astray and needed to be restored.

Hmmm–maybe you’ll have some luck with secular articles or books about the fact that scholars have determined that the “restoration idea” held in the 1800s was wrong. But I’d advise prayer for your JW instead.

As a former JW you would be hard pressed to get a Jehovah’s Wittness to read a book about Catholic teachings - it just isn’t encouraged. To get to a JW, you gotta strike at the foundation of his/her faith - the Watchtower organization. And do it with gentleness. I took me years even after leaving to let go of some biases. Good luck.

Hi Don, you can refer this link to your JW friend for a look:
catholic-forum.com/members/popestleo/cathjw.html

Non-Catholic website that tackles the JW’s misconceptions:
4witness.org/jwysbt/ysbt_contents.php

Book: Jehovah’s Witnesses Answered Verse by Verse

Hope this helps and good luck 👍

PS:Take heed on jw2lds2catholic’s advice. It’s better you narrate what you have learnt from the links or the book, and engange in a professional conversation.

You need one book: Crisis of Conscience by Ray Franz, a former Governing Body Member (kind of like the POPE to JW’s) who quit after being one of JW’s for over 60 years.

IF you can get him to read it, he’ll understand the language of the Witnesses and realize that a real Governiing Body Member actually left the Witnesses because of what I call “Doublespeak”.

Good luck.

They are forbidden to read anything critical of the watchtower.

Maybe a New Testament Greek Lexicon?

They have their own translation.
Yes, they do have their own ‘translation’ but it’s not that far off from a Catholic Bible that an untrained person would actually notice.

They also tell people that their translation is from the original language, which probably worked twenty years ago, but really isn’t applicable today, because a lot of work has gone into refining and repairing a lot of the newer translations.

They also make sure to tell their newbies that they, too, believe in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, however they aren’t part of a Trinity. Then they suggest to people to ask their Catholic friends and relatives to explain the Trinity to them. Well, most often than not, they can’t, because Catholics are notoriously (not the Catholics here obviously 🙂 ) known for not knowing the Bible and what’s in it.

The book I recommended, Crisis of Conscience, (if you can get a Witness to read it) is written by a former Governing Board Member who left because he did have a Crisis of Conscience. It’s written in both Watchtower Speak and Christian Speak (not Catholic), but it’s a start.

People don’t just ‘leave’ the Witnesses after 60 years and men on the Governing Body don’t leave, period. Ray Fanz did. And believe me, he paid a price in losing his family, friends, etc.

The books I would recommend to any JW is the books which the Watch Tower has published since the very beginning of their organization. The earlier it was produced the better. Their own books destroy themselves as their beliefs then, as indicated in their own writings, have either been proved to be wrong or they are completely different that what the WatchTower teaches today.

JW are forbidden from reading non-WatchTower published books; however, if the JW you are dealing with is willing to risk banishment by reading other literature, then by all means give them something with real Theological Value, like the Philokalia or the Ladder of Divine Ascent.

exactly…“their” own
Even with their own translation, you can prove them wrong. My copy has notes I’ve written in it. For instance, their translation of the Transfiguration affirms that it was “really Moses and Elijah.” Problem: Deuteronomy states Moses was dead, and according to them dead men tell no tales, nor make any appearances.

slip them some mind altering drugs insted of a book! [just kidding] but seriously I have friends and friends family and relatives who are JWs and they do like we do, take info and throw it away. they are not allowed to read anything unless it is approved by watchtower or maybe if they are getting ready to leave KH. I discuss/argue with them to no avail sometimes you think your wasting your time talking to them then something happens like years ago some elders came to see me told me I was a GOAT and I wasn’t to talk to thier members anymore, well I guess no one ever told them what happens when you tell the IRISH they can’t do something or they have to do something, [thats a whole different subject ]
so really all you can do is PRAY that GOD will remove the scales from thier eyes like He did with St Paul
