What can a non-slasher and audience do?

I used to read slash, but I don’t now because of its homosexuality. But I’m scared that even though I read non-slash fanfiction of Sherlock, You know, Holmes and Watson who are just friends in a fanfiction, am I letting the devil tempt me? I’ve tried saying to myself that those fics/programmes aren’t slash, I’m just thinking how not to think about it so I ended up like I am thinking about it, but the fics should be alright to read.

Another thing,what about television programmes like Desperate Housewives that contain “adult elements”? Even if I like look somewhere else during those parts, am I doing something wrong?

You must see every art display with a critic eye.
You’ve got to create the starrygirl-A and the starrygirl-B.
the starrygirl-A sees, hears, listens, the starrygirl-B makes her criticism, is it good, is it bad and so on.
You cannot shut yourself from the world, you must see it with Christian eyes. It takes a long time to do it as I guess you are a young girl…

No, you cannot watch “anything”. You need to think about what you are putting into your mind. Why would you want to watch “Desperate Housewives”? The entire premise of the show is immoral. It is not a tale in which good triumphs over evil and along the way there are disturbing elements-- no this show has no virtue, promotes no virtue, promotes only vice and secular morals.

So, no, you cannot just watch “anything”. You need to discern more carefully what you watch and WHY you want to watch it.

The poster who gave you the advice to watch anything but be critical of it doesn’t quite understand that young people can’t do that yet. :rolleyes:

I suggest that you spend very little time watching TV and reading fanfiction. Both mediums are mindless and trash to a great extent. TV is a box placed in your home to sell you stuff, with a little distraction thrown in so you don’t realize its true purpose. Fanfiction can be porn, and it’s also garbage that doesn’t even qualify as 4th grade level writing.

Here is a good guide to use in your life going forward: Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Imagine Jesus reading or watching over your shoulder. Would he smile or would he be sad that you used your eyes and your mind for such a purpose?

Just a bit, I would say. I started watching Desperate Housewives because they were watching it.

Hm, is there a place I can find a list of “suggested” tv shows, books, etc? Because if I want to have some entertainment, I don’t think I can trust my own judgement.

I may sound a little paranoid… but is Sherlock okay? I really love the show. While I was watching it, I did think about some “questionable” scenes. They are quite subtle and though there was a nude woman, her reason was because she doesn’t want anyone to get clues from her, plus no improper body parts were shown because some props were positioned to cover them. I thought as long as I just distract myself or say to myself “this is inappropriate to do in real life, it’ll be fine”.

I do hope I didn’t do anything bad by watching that today…

You should discern what is suitable and what is not by thinking of how it might affect your relationship with Christ.

There is a good place to find out about movies from a catholic perspective;
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops review movies & have these reviews online.

I think we need to be more discerning about what media we digest. Music about getting wasted, sleeping with lots of women, smoking weed, glorifying money; video about cheating and affairs, extravagant weddings and the cursing and fights and vanity involved, obsessing about celebrities and fashion, and over-eating without shame?

This is going to be a comment from a non-believer – albeit one who thinks that “Desperate Housewives” is trash – so I hope I’m not overstepping any boundaries here, and I hope you take what I saw with however many grains of salt you think are appropriate.

But are you seriously suggesting that “good Christians” should only expose themselves to art in which “good triumphs over evil” and which contain no “disturbing elements”? Granted, “art” may be a stretch when we’re talking about “Desperate Housewives,” but think about all of the classical works of literature, theater, and film that you’re just tossing aside. What of Shakespeare’s tragedies? What of the works of James Joyce? Beckett? Proust? Donne? Nearly the entire history of poetry?

What you’re saying, taken to its logical end, implies an extreme “fortress mentality” where you shut yourself out from anything that doesn’t already agree with your preconceived ideas about what is correct. That’s not any way to learn anything new about the world: it’s a sure-fire recipe for making sure that you stay trapped in a mental prison of your own construction, turning around the same old ideas again and again.

Again, I’m not trying to offer this as “official” advice, and I’m not trying to “talk” anyone “out” of anything – so if you want the religious take on this issue, please by all means listen to the other posters – but from my perspective, I want to expose myself to as many different points of view on a subject as possible before deciding where I stand on the subject

This is far from what I suggested and definitely not what most Catholics should do.
Obviously there are some morally objectionable things which we should not be exposed to or expose ourselves to. Pornography etc…

Apart from that it’s a matter of discernment. I’m a big fan of Criminal Minds and Cold Case - They can be dark and good doesn’t always win out but they make for good viewing. For anybody.
