What can I give him...?

My family has been going through an incredibly tough year. We had 3 family members in the hospital so far. One has died, the other was released, and the last after being intubated for almost a month uncouncious has been transported from the ICU to a sub acute rehab. I need to send him some documents, but was wondering if there might be any kind of sacramental or book or specific saint or anything that could help him maybe rethink his faith and help him maybe get on the road back to the Church. This is not a religious man, at all. However, when I had to go through his wallet I found a picture of Padre Pio…I was shocked, I think somebody must have gave it to him, or it was from his recently deceased mom, my grandma who loved her saints.(She was from Puerto Rico) Anyway any suggestions are very appreciated. I need to send this out asap.

Well, since he had the picture of Padre Pio in his wallet… why not get him a book on the life of this great saint? He might find the miracles and wonders associated with Padre Pio very inspiring to his faith. God bless… and so sorry to hear of your family difficulties. You will be in our prayers. Trust in Jesus, He loves you and He cares! 🙂
 
I found a book, Reading the Psalms with St. Padre Pio. I really like it.

It’s funny, even before you mentioned Padre Pio in your post, I thought of him… I think he’s the Saint that you might need to focus on for your family member.

I will say a prayer for him.
 
The Padre Pio idea sounds very good to me. I would also recommend *My Life with the Saints *by Father James Martin. Fr. Martin was a corporate CEO before he joined the Jesuits. His book is about his spiritual odyssey and the relevence of the saintws.
 
I think you guys are right. What do you think about a book on Padre Pio, and maybe a Rosary with a how to guide??..cause he ain’t going anywhere…and he says that out of the ten terrible tv channels he has four of them are in spanish, which ironically, he isn’t that good at…

I think those are both fine ideas for him. He might also enjoy some of the writings/books of the late Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. Bishop Sheen might be very familiar to him, as he was very well known in the United States, during his lifetime (his cause for eventual canonization has now been opened). God bless.
 
Anything specific from Fulton Sheen? I do know that my auntie and remember his shows…
 
Monicathree,if he had a picture of Padre Pio in his possession, then pray to Padre Pio.I often read my books on Padre Pio, and when I did when he was alive, I often smelled beautiful roses. One day, as I was reading about Padre Pio, my son called me to pick him up from his friends house.My son was 16 at the time.As I was driving to his friends house, my car was consumed with the scent of roses.When I picked up my son, I asked him if he smelled anything. He replied, “I smell roses dad”.It was winter and there were no roses in the area. Padre Pio usually gave off the smell of roses or sulphur.Before departing this life, Padre Pio said that when he died, his prayers and intercession would be greater in heaven than they were on earth.I know and have none others that went to confession with Padre Pio. He knew their sins before they confessed, and reminded them of sins they did not mention. I believe that ANYONE that confides in Padre Pio will not be disappointed.
