Nikolaite:
I would point out that with credit being so easy now, and certain groups of people having a more readily disposable income, that is more likely a large part of the current reasoning behind acquiring more or varied firearms than anything else. There is absolutely NOTHING immoral about liking, enjoying and collecting firearms. Firearms are not intrinsically evil, they’re neutral tools.
I do not say that firearms are intrinsically evil. And I readily admit that as disposable income increases, enthusiasts buy more or varied firearms. But they are NOT neutral tools. These types of weapons are built for one thing: effective killing. Now, I know that the vast majority of folks owning them have no desire to ever use them for that. But there is something warped about it none the less. And now, you have a person, who grew up playing violent video games, was socially ostracized as a kid, throw in a little mental illness, and he turns 18 and buys a ar-1 and imagines himself as Rambo (this last statement is likely shared by many wholly sensible gun owners these days), and the combination is a disaster waiting to happen. Throw in the prevalence of handguns and assault weapons among the criminal class, and we know we have way too many of these guns around.
One only has to look at violent crime patterns. While these guns have become more and more prominent over the last 25-30 years, overall violent crime has trended downward. Yet mass shootings and gang killings have skyrocketed. It would seem there is a definite correlation between the types of crimes we are having problems with and the prevalence of these types of weapons.
Again, among the farmers and ranchers I grew up with, these style of weapons would have been looked upon with scorn.
