What can we do about the shootings?

We may not have progressed there yet, but China has.

3/23/2010 Zheng Minsheng murdered 8 children with a knife.
5/12/2010 Wu Huanming killed 7 children with a knife
8/4/2010 Fang Jiantang slashed more than 20 children and staff with a knife
August 2011 a woman slashed 8 children with a box cutter.
September 2011 Wang hongbin killed a young girl and 3 adults taking their children to nursery school
12/14/2012 a villager in chenpeng, Henan Province stabbed 23 children and an elderly woman.

I’ll try to address your questions and others seen on here.
Firstly, I honestly have no problem with tightening regulations on guns-and I break with other conservatives in that I even support raising the age to 21 for gun purchases, background checks, etc.
But honestly, I think the end game of the far left Dems( maybe not the moderate types) is total consfication, and repeal of the 2nd amendment if possible.
Then you can kiss our 1st Amendment rights and 4th amendment rights goodbye, as well.
As far as other countries, I agree with RR in post # 144. We are by far the most populous developed
country, and also by far the youngest average age, and younger people tend to commit more crimes.
Other developed countries have had domestic terror attacks, Japan had a couple that comes to mind.
I still believe that declining morals and family structure play a strong role.
Just look at the violence in the inner cities where the out of wedlock rate is 75%( whites are catching up at 45%)
Conservative AA Walter Williams wrote a column recently about how when he graduated high school in 1954 in the poor part of Philadelphia, high school students used to be able to bring guns to school for shooting clubs and carry them on the subway and leave them with the teacher during the day! And in the rural areas students used to go hunting before school and then lock their guns in their trunks on school grounds during the school day. He remarked that any Principal that allowed that today would be fired and possibly imprisoned. So something has changed.
Finally, I believe they used to lock people up prior to 1970 or so if they thought someone was mentally ill and thought they would be a threat to themselves or others. I don’t know about other countries, but they don’t do that here these days, and I’m not saying they should- but that prevented some violence, too.

Your reference to several mentally troubled individuals as militia is a misuse of the term. I have been in the active military and own several hunting rifles; I far far more likely am part of the militia as considered by the drafters of the Constitution. And that does not make me one of the far right twits who hang out in isolated parts of the US; but if we had an invasion by another country intending a military takeover, I likely would be involved. We - people like me, a generation above me - were the reason the japanese had no intention of invading the US. Do read a bit of history on that war.

They didn’t? The dead Redcoats seems to think so.

And for your information, people who own an AR 15 don’t own an assault weapon either - they own a semi automatic rifle, and semi auto rifles have been around for @ 100 years - they just did not have plastic handguards, which leads to the emotional “conversations” going on.

@casslean Their shootings may be lower, but have you checked the stats on bombings, knifings and acid attacks? I sincerely hope someone will link to those stories by googling. I would gladly do so, but don’t know how.

What can be done to stop the shooting of people around the country?
The recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton were horrendous.
The El Paso shooter seemed to leave a manifesto of hate for Hispanics.
Why do some people seem to feel the need to resort to violence?
Hate seems to be rampant all over this country.
Are there any answers to be had, or do we just pray for the victims and wait for the next shooting to occur?
If you cannot stop people from sinning in general, how can you imagine that you could stop people from sinning in a specific circumstance?

There is a lot of inconsistent reporting about the El Paso shooter, so it is practically impossible to judge a motive.

What do you mean we cant even discuss the problem? It is being discussed right here and in millions of other places. Just on google a search for dayton shooting had a return of 260 million hits/ El paso at 510 million hits. What you wrote is inaccurate.

What will most likely happen is nothing.
Those who have the power to do something about the situation are not inclined to do so, for whatever the reason.
I pray for the many people who will be the victims of future shootings. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

There are ways and means, but even suggesting them brings forth a huge attack from the gun lobby and its supporters. A few days ago I saw a thread composed of politically inspired cartoons, but it is now gone. If we cannot even discuss the problem, how can we supply a solution?
Let’s be realistic about gun legislation as a solution. According to a survey by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, the citizens of the United States possess about 46% of the world’s small weapons that are in civilian hands, representing about 120 guns per 100 persons. That is nearly twice the number of the next-most-armed citizenry (Falklands, 66 per 100 people). (We have about 4.3% of the world’s population.)

The reason that most likely nothing will happen is because the problem is immoral people. You can’t legislate morality. You can’t use the police to beat it into people. And you can’t make immoral people moral by disarming people who are already moral.

Don’t forget Our Lord’s words here: ‘But they said: “Nothing.” Then said he unto them: “But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a scrip; and he that hath not, let him sell his coat, and buy a sword.”’
[Luke 22:36]

The sword is the offensive weapon of the soldier at the time, by the way.

If any of the shooters from this past week had knives instead of a gun, what do you imagine the difference in outcome would have been?

@TK421 “There should be sweeping reforms in gun control that include the prohibition of handguns.”

Since that won’t be effective because only the good guy, law-abiders will obey, we’ll accomplish that how? With gestapo searching each house, including toilet tank, under appliances, above ceiling tiles & inside duct work? Seriously? Heil, Hitler!

Over a gun?

Yes of course. More people are still likely to be killed with a gun. Acid…probably 1-2 individuals in a group attack.

Plus the purchasing of acid with a low enough pH is heavily monitored. You can’t just pop into wallmart and purchase pH1-3 in significant quantities.

Is this a discussion? Someone suggests a solution, and the gun enthusiasts become feral about their “gun rights”? Moscow Mitchell has two bipartisan legislative proposals on his desk since February, and he (single handedly) prevented them to be put it up to vote!

Of course, right now, after these two massacres there is some “discussion”. But there was some after Sandy Hook, after the Las Vegas massacre, after all sorts of high school shootings… and what came out of it? Nothing! The parents of the victims were accused of “staging” the whole massacre!

It is time to face reality.

Simply put: if all young male mass shooters are Christ-less (as they obviously are) and / or lack a father, it does not logically follow therefore that all or even many Christ-less and / or fatherless young males become mass shooters.

One thing I’m definitely certain about: no one who holds Christ in their heart can ever commit such an act. And I include those who own multiple firearms.
