The human person is part of a bigger collectivity and the ego can at times lower its barriers to fuse with the bigger reality.

Sounds like a metaphor for the ability to not be selfish and love your neighbor.

…or perhaps something along Buddhistic lines?

There can be no “fusion” of anybody with anybody else. Sounds off-the-wall to me.

The human person has a soul and is an individual. “Mankind” has no such dignity. Any collective outside of a union with God is beneath the dignity that God has created in the free personal center that is the “I”, and it is this “I” that makes a personal decision for God or not for God.

Our spiritual aspects in our nature can unite us with each other, as Aquinas states “The object known is in the knower”, but this does not rise to a autonomous “collective” but remains two individuals. In marriage, the two become one flesh… “till death do us part”. It is a denigration of the nature of the person to elevate a collective over the individual.

We are united to God through Christ not as a member of a group but by a free choice given by the “self”, the “I”. This then makes us a member of the Body of Christ.

C.S. Lewis tried, very hard, to live by a philosophy similar to this–that there was a Spirit or Mind in the world, and each person, including himself, were a small part or bud of this mind. He found, however, that to be consistent, the Mind could also have ideas and communicate with him–and the more he tried to see the world in this way, the more he came to recognize it as a way of understanding our relationship with God.

I’d add that, as Catholics, once a human soul is created, it is eternal. For better or worse.
