Please forgive me for my thoughts, before I ask my question I wish to state I am a devout Catholic, and have many statues and devotions to Mary, and I sincerely beleive in the Immaculate Conception.

However, in a debate with a protestant, I was doing so well as most of them havn’t a clue! Then the Immaculate Conception came up, so I explained how it is the conception of Mary as being the chosen one and made without sin in the womb in order to bear Jesus, because something sinless such as Jesus cannot come from something bad.

However, this was thrown back at me, the Protestant asked, if something Sinless and good cannot come from something stained and sinless, how did Mary’s mother give birth to her? Surely with the idea of the Immaculate Conception God would have had to go all the way back to the beginning of time, sparing from original sin Mary’s mother, and then her Grandmother, and so on…This threw me as I knew not how to answer. The idea that was put to me was that it would be unnecessary for God to do this, when he could just make Jesus perfect as he did Mary in the immaculate conception. I’m sure you understand what I mean by this, and although I am unmoved from my beleifs, I would like to know how to defend against that argument, it was a very good one I would have to give it to the protestant lol! So what is the answer?

God Bless. x
