What Carmelite Saint Is This?

Hello,

I recently received an icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. On the border are many Carmelite Saints (i.e., Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint Simon Stock, etc.).

One of them has me perplexed, as I can’t determine what saint it is. The Saint is clothed in the colors of Carmel and the title is:

O Arios ΒΡΟΚΑΡΔΟS

Does anyone know who this Saint is?

I don’t know what the title means at all, but remember that the Carmelites treat the prophet Elijah as their spiritual father and he is often depicted as a Carmelite with the other Carmelite saints. Maybe it is him?

Given my very limited knowledge of the Greek alphabet, my guess would be Brocardus (Brocard). The Greek “R” looks like a “P,” and “K” might transliterate to “C.” The Greek “Delta” (the triangle-shaped letter) is equivalent to “D.”

So “ΒΡΟΚΑΡΔΟS” might be written “Brocardos” or “Brocardus.”

There is a 13th century monk Brocard who wrote a rule that became the foundation of the Carmelite order. See catholic-forum.com/saints/saintabw.htm or catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=1843 .

Thanks, I’m sure that is correct. I was looking up Brocardos, which doesn’t hit anything - but that would be the Greek spelling of Brocardus, Brocard.

Arios is another spelling of Agios (albeit rare and from a misrepresentation of the Greek alphabet).

When given in caps it is ΑΓΙΟΣ which has at times been turned into Arios. Even the lower case gamma - αγιος - can be at times represented as an r through visual association (and a poor one at that - the more common being y) being used in lieu of phonetic and/or linguistic association being used.
