What Catholics & Protestants Can Learn from each other

Having a Protestant-leaning father who is oh-so critical of Catholicism, I can attest that this is a very relevant topic.

Catholics can learn…
  1. Studying the Bible outside of Church is good (30 minutes = plenary indulgence, after all)
  2. It is a good thing to invite people to Church with you
  3. Doing other things at the Church besides going to Mass is good
Protestants can learn…
  1. Protestantism did not exist for 1500 years- until then it was Catholic or Orthodox
  2. An infallible book needs an infallible interpretor
  3. There is a prayer life outside of the Bible (Catholics can pray 20 minute rosaries, 10 minute divine mercy chaplets, and thousands upon thousands of meditations, chaplets, etc.that can lead to hours on end of non-repetitive prayer. Protestants have “free” prayer- which after a while can get old- “I pray for my grandma, and my mom, and my dad… and… hm… did I mention my grandma?”)

Have you got any suggestions or views on this topic? I presume they don’t mean it to be a session where Catholics and Protestants argue over the origins and legitimacy of their faith etc.; rather, I presume it will include issues such as liturgy, prayer…(though I don’t know what to expect really!).

It sounds like a wonderful place. Perhaps if we all started seeing Christ first we would see ourselves second.

I second GardenswithKids and Grace Seeker.

Id say this bookstore sounds like a great place to leave our clubhouses and get to know each other by starting with the best thing Jesus. Besides we are supposed to spend eternity together, a little practice this side would do us all good.
 
I wonder if they are going to show that DVD that filmed a series of conversations between a Catholic priest and an Evangelical minister. It was very good. Check it out here.

I think you’re right, Paul - I didn’t realise it but the advertisement is actually entitled ‘Common Ground: What Protestants and Catholics can learn from each other’ - so I now assume that it is this DVD they’re talking about, rather than a lecture, discussion, etc. So, worth seeing you think…

Hopefully there may be time for discussion afterwards, though the DVD is rather long!..🙂

It is a good thing to start from the common points, ultimately it could lead to unity towards one Christendom, which must be encouraged for peaceful solutions of the religious issues.

Protestants can learn :
  • Catholics or most of them actually own a bible , and we also read the book !
  • We honour Mary…we don’t worship Mary in place of , or before Jesus.
  • What christian life was like for the 15 centuries before Martin Luther.
  • The meaning behind us making the sign of the cross.
  • That a Catholic mass can be remarkably exciting…even charimatic if the choir sings some of the more modern hyms !
  • That Catholics believe that they are saved by the Grace of Jesus…and good works are the by-product of knowing our saviour personally.
  • That most Catholics sincerely hope for better communication between the different denominations.
  • Why we call our priests father !
  • That we do not and never have worshipped idols.
    Catholics can learn :
  • To be more tolerant of our Protestant brothers…always remembering that the main core of their denominations are not rabidly anti-catholic.
  • That it is downright wrong to get uptight when the Mass lasts longer than an hour i know this will strike a raw nerve !]
  • To be far more evangelical in our attitude towards our faith and share in the sincere zeal for Jesus that our brothers often display.
  • To verbalise to others that they have made a choice to follow Jesus and are saved.👍
