For Catholics, is another name for God, “Truth” in a way? For example, Catholics worship Truth, and that’s what we call God?

God is real, not a metaphor or some sort of symbolism.

We worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Three Divine Persons of the One Triune God. :signofcross:

So anybody who doesn’t believe/worship the Trinity doesn’t worship the one true God?

No, they just have very little understanding of the one true God we worship. This is due either to willful ignorance or invincible ignorance, which only the Son will judge. :signofcross:

That depends. Some say that muslims worship the same God we do although they do not believe in the Trinity or Jesus.

Then there is the issue of LDS and JH. There are quite a few so-called “Christian” sects that are not Trinity focused.

The answer might depend on how wound up you are in the tolerance and politically correct crowd.

Me personally, if’n you ain’t baptizing in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you ain’t makin’ it to the pearly gates.

There are exceptions to my previous statement where you realize your salvation in spite of your religion not because of it, but your salvation is through Jesus. All salvation is through Jesus.

My God is the God of Genesis. The Omnipotent Source of all. I believe as Genesis tell us, that all above and around the earth were made for light and the keeping of time and seasons. imho, there are no aliens, there is no life out there in space. Or, at least any with souls. There is only God, His Son, and His Spirit. They are one. The Son and the Spirit are of God.

I believe the Roman Catholic Church is the Church of Christ. I believe the Son was here to unite mankind in one religion. The New Covenant. The Apostles were chosen to begin building His Church. A Church whose mission is the salvation of souls.

I believe the Catholic Rites of the East hold true Apostolic Succession, and fulfill Christ’s will in the same way the Latin Church does.

Worship truth?

Have you ever heard a Catholic address any of their prayers to ‘Truth’, or seen any Catholic prayers written which do so? Ever seen a Catholic bow down before some image purporting to be an image of ‘Truth’ or to represent Divine Truth? Or sing a hymn of praise to Truth? Or celebrate a feastday in honour of this divine Truth that we supposedly worship?

We do not worship Truth in any sense of the word. We respect it because of its being an attribute of Christ, who called Himself THE truth and stated that in His truth lies our freedom - but it isn’t another name for God, nor do we even give it the sorts of honours we give to the most obscure of saints! How could we possibly worship an abstract noun?

We do not worship “truth”. It not some new age metaphor or symbolism. We worship the triune God. He is omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient. However, the Jews obviously worship the same God, and the Muslims worship the same God as well. Unfortunately they are ignorant of the Holy Trinity. Whether they are going to hell or not, I sincerely cannot tell you. I know that God will decide.

Jesus (The Son) is God
Jews and Muslims do not worship the Son.
Therefore they do not worship God.

How can one worship what one is ignorant of?

Pope Benedcit did not agree with your bingo. Also, you just eliminated, Abraham, Moses, David, etc. with that bingo.
Umm… i’m pretty sure they worshiped God… Which has now been revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

So they may not have known the great mystery (and i think God wanted it that way because of all the polytheistic religions around them) but they still worshiped God who created them who willed them into being who inspires them etc.

Some people get annoyed when the words Muslims and Christians are used in the same sentence, and it is confusing, maybe that is on purpose, however just because Muslins worhip a God they are NOT christians. T be a christians you have to believe that Jesus is the son of God, otherwise you are not a christian, like the Mormons, JW, etc. Most non-christians, like the Muslins, believe that Jesus was a prophet, and perhaps a great one at that, also like the Jews who are not christians either, they just believe that Jesus was a prophet like Moses and Abraham, no better, no less.

We seek the truth but we don’t subsitute it for God, although God is the essence of truth and therefore worth worshipping.

This changes what I responded to and is an answer to a different question. The partiarchs worshipped the true God without believing Him to be a Triune person and it is accepted because it had not been revealed to them. Then the above (the one I responded to) is flawed.

The Jews before and at the time of Jesus worshiped God as we do, however, Jesus :signofcross: himself declared:

“Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.” - John 14:6

NO ONE can worship the Father without going through the Son. And you can’t worship a “part” of God because God is infinitely simple and has no constituent parts.

Judaism at that time was very divided (Pharisees, Sadducee, Qumran) that’s why Jesus :signofcross: the Son, came down from Heaven, and gave us the way to the Father.

Laus Deo

Hi aball 1035.

I think it would have been more accurate to ask Who we worship.

As the previous post pointed out, Jesus said He is the truth, he also said we must worship in spirit and in truth :

**John 4: 22-24 ** [NAB]

You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.

God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."

pnewton’s posts are right on target. The Jewish people worship the one true God and their religion has an unparalleled status in relation to Christianity. Pope John Paul II called the Jews, “our older brothers.”

Here’s what is stated in the Catechism about the status of the Jewish religion:

from this link secondexodus.com/html/basics/jewishorigins.htm

Catechism of the Catholic Church § 839

The relationship of the Church with the Jewish people. When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the people of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People, the first to hear the Word of God. The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God’s revelation in the Old Covenant. To the Jews Rom 9:4 “belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ,” Rom 11:29 “for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

I am a little confused over the Jews. God had a Covenant with the Jews, they were also His Chosen People. Yes the Covenant was fulfilled with the Death and Resurrection of Christ, but does the Bible or Church say that the Jews are no longer God’s Chosen People. Since we know Enoch and Moses are in Heaven how do we know that God doesn’t have a special place in His Heart for the Jews as He was a Jew. I understand that we as Christians are also God’s Chosen People.

I am not sure they fit into the same category as the Muslims or others who don’t accept Christ.

What does the Church say on this? I surely am not going to judge the Jews nor will I judge anyone else as only Our Lord can do this. Thank God I am not responsible for judging others salvation. I believe that we as Catholics should share Christ with all people and pray for them to accept Him as truely God, but I will leave it up to God to make the final decision.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

22 You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him. 24 God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.

Roman Catechism,Part I Article IV;

Reasons Why Christ Suffered

The reasons why the Saviour suffered are also to be explained, that thus the greatness and intensity of the divine love towards us may the more fully appear. Should anyone inquire why the Son of God underwent His most bitter Passion, he will find that besides the guilt inherited from our first parents the principal causes were the vice’s and crimes which have been perpetrated from the beginning of the world to the present day and those which will be committed to the end of time. In His Passion and death the Son of God, our Saviour, intended to atone for and blot out the sins of all ages, to offer for them to his Father a full and abundant satisfaction.

Besides, to increase the dignity of this mystery, Christ not only suffered for sinners, but even for those who were the very authors and ministers of all the torments He endured. Of this the Apostle reminds us in these words addressed to the Hebrews: Think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself; that you be not wearied, fainting in your minds. In this guilt are involved all those who fall frequently into sin; for, as our sins consigned Christ the Lord to the death of the cross, most certainly those who wallow in sin and iniquity crucify to themselves again the Son of God, as far as in them lies, and make a mockery of Him. This guilt seems more enormous in us than in the Jews, since according to the testimony of the same Apostle: If they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory; while we, on the contrary, professing to know Him, yet denying Him by our actions, seem in some sort to lay violent hands on him.

What is written here is exactly the same only from pre-Vatican 2 texts. I feel much more comfortable with the wording from the Challoner Douay-Rheims translation and the Roman Catechism contains know ambiguity(this is not to imply anything regarding post-conciliar documents or translations, though I personally think the NAB is the worst translation I’ve ever read.) Both Books mentioned sit on my nightstand, though I like the ability to search and cut&paste online.

As a Roman Catholic I can assure you without a shadow of a doubt the we worship a Who, not a What. We worship God, the Father, the Son of God; Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, the triune God. One God, three Divine “natures” or Persons, if you will. You see God the Father during creation and walking with Adam, in the burning bush talking with Moses, You see our Blessed Lord in the 33 years of his life, sent by the father for the remission of sin and you see the Holy Ghost decending as a dove and at Pentecost.
