Actually, the priests themselves chose to leave. Certainly, they appear to have been influenced by the culture of the time in which morals (particularly sexual morals) and commitments were being questioned and disregarded. Too often individuals interpreted the aggiornamento (updating and reform) of the Second Vatican Council to suite their own opinions and tastes—regardless of what the Church was really saying.
