Blue is for the Virgin Mary–
Red is given to the Sacred Heart of Jesus–

But what color…lets say votive candle should one dedicate to St. Joseph?

I am from Detroit and Polish it is traditional to wear red on his day, but that doesn’t mean it is his color. What color would you say?

In pictures and statues his robes are traditionally brown and/or green. I think a green candle would be lovely.

Remember Red is also the colour of the Holy Spirit as well as the Sacred Heart, so no reason you couldn’t light a red candle for St Joe if it’s traditional.

Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen.

😃

I always associate him with white for the white lily he carries. It represents his chastity, if I remember correctly.

I guessed red because that is what is worn on his Feast. Of course, I happened to wear red on St. Patrick’s Day and I am wearing green today! :doh2:

I have been told red is associted with this solemnity. The reason why I was told is because this day is celebrated highly by Italians (especially Sicilians), and red is in the Italian flag. They don’t wear green, so as not to confuse this day with St. Patrick’s Day. St. Joseph’s intercession has been attributed to the ending of a famine that plauged Sicily.

I never thought of White for his Chastity. That makes pretty good sense.

Thanks for the insight

I always thought brown was St Joseph’s color.
Btw, how did the Italians get hold of him? I checked the patron saints website and he isn’t listed as one of Italy’s patrons.

I have never heard of red (indicative of a martyr) being worn for St Joseph – Only white?

yes brown, the color of the wood he worked with. or white the color of the lily for a peaceful death.

I still say green should be in the mix there somewhere - his robes are always brown and green.

Maybe burn three votives, one of each colour? Unless you’re lucky enough to be able to find a candle that has brown, green and white in it? 🙂

I’m also from Detroit, and here red is definitely the color of the day.

My Catholic elem. school used to have a color day on Mar. 18, where the Irish kids could wear green, the Italian and Polish kids wore red, and the others could pick the one they liked best. It always turned into an informal competition.

Brown, I guess because every statue or picture of St. Joseph shows him with brown hair and with a brown tunic.

The celebration of the St Joseph’s table etc is more specifically Sicilian - he is a patron of Sicily - and dates back to the middle Ages. The most common story is that the island was going through a famine and the people of Sicily successfully sought St Joseph’s intercession to end it.

In my city the Italian kids used to wear red on St Patrick’s day while the Irish wore green, this was in order to tick the Irish off… on the feast of St. Joseph the Italian kids also wore red, so I went with red on this one. This is a generations old thing where I grew up… Nice, considering both are saints, huh?
