What commentary should I get for Revelation?

You might consider the Navarre Commentary… comes with the RSV and the Latin Vulgate. About $14 for the one book
 
Scott Hahn’s book “The Lamb’s Supper” is also great at explaining much of Revelation and how it is the map for the Holy Mass.

There really are no good commentaries on Revelation by anyone.
 
First, I would like to add my voice to those recommending The Navarre Bible and the Lamb’s Supper.

I would also recommend Days of Vengeance by David Chilton, a protestant. It covers one particular way to view the book of Revelation - partial preterism. But it also had a lot of intereting things to say about how Revelation relates to the Liturgy.

I have never read a good Revelation commentary. In my opinion, our understanding of the Book of Revelation is still developing, because Gold did not want it fully understood until near the end.

That’s an interesting perspective of scripture.

That is to say, ALL of scripture is not profitable, but some parts were not applicable to Christians for 2000 years.

Does the same apply to parts of the gospels as well? The Olivet Discourse comes to mind.

I also have read the Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn, it is excellent! Very logical thoughts…

I have both the Navarre Commentary and The Lamb’s Supper that I used when we had the Scripture Study on the Revelation at my former parish. Both were very helpful

We use the LittleRock Scripture study that use The Message of the Book of Revelation by Charles T. Chapman as its commentary. Although Chapman is a Episcopalian minister. I found his commentary ok, but I was glad I had the other two resources to use.

'xactly. If God did not intend for us to understand Revelation till the end, then divine revelation is incomplete, because understanding is nececessarily a part of revelation (Tradition). This is contrary to Christian thought. Since we believe divine revelation closed at the death of St. John, then it is necessary that Revelation be understandable. Revelation therefore has already been fulfilled and will also be fulfilled.

This error about Revelation should be even more forcefully rejected with regards to the Gospel. ALL of scripture is profitable. The Discourse was fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.

The belief that "there are still new understandings that have not been given to us " is actually quite gnostic.

i to have read the lamb’s supper and found it to be very helpful but the best i have “heard” is a tape presentation given by dr. hahn from st. joseph communications called “the end:a study of the book of revelation” – it is kind of expensive but very in-depth – recording of his lectors at steubenville
 
Does anyone really understand the book of Revelation? It seems like a prediction of the New Age: Revelation 21:1 ***And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. ***
 
why only one book?? I recommend the Haydock Bible Commentary. It covers all the books thouroughly and it is the best commentary there is

The commentary on Revelation by Wilfrid Harrington (Liturgical Press, 1993) in the Sacra Pagina NT commentary series is very good. Up to date, scholarly, clearly written. At 293 pages, not overly long either. I enjoyed it.
