What Constitutes An Act Of Charity?

I don’t know that a prayer is what the priest had in mind. He told me to do 2 simple acts of charity before the end of the day. That kinda led me to believe he wasn’t talking about saying a prayer. But I do like the prayer!
tkdnick:

I tend to agree with you that the priest probably wasn’t talking about the prayer - Ask him what he meant if you see him.

Otherwise, Say the prayer 2x and try to do 2 “Good Deeds” (Holding a door open for someone, helping someone carry his stuff to his table or car if he needs it, buying a homeless person some food). This will cover all the bases and will make you a better Christian.

Next time a priest gives you a penance and you don’t fully understand it, please ask him to clarify what he means. I suspect you were afraid that you would look stupid if you asked. Nothing could be further from the truth. I had a large part of my brain taken out over 12 years ago. I can’t remember the Act of Contrition and have to ask the priest to lead me through the prayer.

Actually, I’m pretty sure I understood what he was saying, I just wasn’t sure what specifically constitutes a “simple act of charity”. Would praying for someone fall in that category? Would holding the door open for someone be enough? When a priest suggests I do an act of charity I almost always find myself going to the store and buying some food and leaving it near my work where I know several homeless people reside, and I was looking for other ideas/options.

I’ve looked at the Catechism and wasn’t able to really find anything to help me with this question. When a priest suggests doing an act of charity, I typically associate it with giving money or goods to someone who has less than me. Is that it? Are there other types of acts of charity? Would praying for someone be an act of charity?
Read all you want in the
Beatitudes Matt 5:1-8 ( I think) and then
Galatians 5: 22 and to put the icing on the cake so as to speak read
1 Corinthians 13. You will fine all your answers there.
Remember Jesus speaking about the “good simariton”. You dont need any more than that.
God bless
