And don’t forget other parts of South America, which has traditionally been a bastion of the Church: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, etc. And in Europe Hungary, Austria, Bavaria (in Germany, it’s true) the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Croatia, et al.
But, as well all know, secular humanism has been usurping the Church’s place in Europe (to paint with a large brush) while Protestantism has been making inroads in South America. While Africa, which heretofore hadn’t had a large Catholic population, is now the fastest growing Catholic continent on earth.
I guess my point is: some countries which have embraced the Faith are lamentably losing it, while others that had it not are gaining it. If you ask this question in 30 years, you’ll have a different answer I suspect, while if you had asked it 30 years ago, one would be surprised at how far the West’s Faith has flagged.
Oh, d’oh, can’t forget Vatican City can we?
