My catholic teaching has always instructed me that sex is strictly bound to marriage and I completely agree. But what defines sex? Is fondling sex? What about “head”? I would greatly appreciate an answer. Thanks

not only sinful outside of marriage, but anything besides sex in the natural manner which leaves open the conception of a child between a husband and wife, is a mortal sin,
sins of the flesh are all mortal, unless of course one has not had full consent to their sin.

I agree about going to the Theology of the Body and the Catechism, but the book “Good News about Sex and Marriage” is fantastic and Catholic too.

From what I understand about “other” activities, inside marriage, is that as long as you are using them for foreplay and tab A goes into slot B at the end and ends in the chance of a child then you’re ok. That’s what I was taught when I got married in the church. So if DH and I want to get a little wild and crazy, but we leave room for regular child-able intercourse at the end then we are not committing a mortal sin. I would suggest talking to your priest about what “wild and crazy” is acceptable though! 😉

ALL sexual acts outside marriage are a grave sin.

ok so I am compleatly new to this site and I hope I do notoffend anyone with my questions or concernes. I am a young adult and am thinking very hard about this man… he just so happens to be cathlic, me a very religiouse person but never brought up in church there for you could kind of ay im a follower of god yet still tramatized by society ha ha, any who in the long run i was very curiouse about this subject. is it ? or is it not? a sin to take part in any form of masturbation? alone i understand its very much a sin and yet bringing another person into it makes it even worse, but would not giving head or oral play count as masturbation? even in a marrage? I find it intresting diffrent cathlics have diffrent answeres is it all on how your raised or is it said set and stone and others abide the truth a little? any feed back would be greatly appriciated.

god bless

I have a question.

What if a married couple is engaging in acts of foreplay, intending on finishing with intercourse, but accidentally finishes before that? That wouldn’t be a sin if you were fully intending on following God’s will and remaining open to life, correct?

thats a very intresting question i am also curiouse about that?

Hi again Rooskie…I certainly did not expect to come across you so quickly, but a really happy event!:tiphat: I hope CAF members will realize that you are not only new to these Forums, but still trying to understand Catholicism!👍

Yes ‘gh’ and ‘op’ are gravely sinful in Catholic Moral Theology and doubly so (even more serious)because they involve another person.

I am not sure of the moral position re marriage…and though I was married (now annulled some 20 years) for 15years (I choose now to live alone in celibate chastity), I never have been sure of that. Never had cause to investigate frankly.
I am sure other CAF members will be able to shed light for you.

Blessings and regards…Barb:)

To commit a sin one must knowing and willingly consent to that sin …consent to mortal sin if it is grave matter…and to vential sin if not grave matter. Grave matter = something that is serious and grave in content.

In the incidence you mention, Wyatt, there is not knowing and willing consent to ‘accidentally finish’; hence, no sin at all is involved.

Rooskie - our New Member - if you cannot get an answer to your questions, or are not happy with an answer. If you put your question into Apologetics Forum - those in that Forum will answer you. Or you can put your question into Ask An Apologist Forum and an apologist, one of them, will answer you. However, as I understand things questions into Ask An Apologist may take some time before it is answered as the questions are prioritized.

Sex as designed by God, is the unitive expression of love, between a man and a woman. Children that may result, are
the fruits of this expression of love.

Anything that is outside natural law is not an expression of love, but eroticism.

Also, having sex outside of marriage, being that an unwanted pregnancy would be harmful not only for the unwanted child, but also for the parents, especially the mother, is contrary to love.

Unnatural sex, even in the context of marriage, is not an expression of love, and therefor, immoral.

Foreplay is an expression of love and is in accord with natural law, and within a marriage, is good.

Outside of a marriage, it merely incises the couple to go further into the full sexual engagement, which for reasons stated above, should not be done.

That all being said, sexual desire is part of nature. It is a strong impulse which can be overwhelming, and why a confessor has to take into consideration the individual situation, to determine if mortal sin was indeed committed or not.

Remember Jesus’s treatment of the woman caught in adultery and remember that his mercy is beyond human understanding. If He forgave the adulteress with compassion, so will he forgive any one who on occasion, fails to remain chaste.
