I’m stunned that his ADC would not have instructed him. But then again, the Lieutenant-governor’s ADC asked our bishop at a funeral if his non-Catholic boss could receive Communion and our bishop said “Pretend you didn’t ask the question.” There are priests who believe this is perfectly all right, our pastor being one of them. He recently gave Communion to the United Church minister and his wife.

It was hard to tell from the 1 minute video what really happened. Did he actually line up for Communion or did the priest come to their pew to give them Communion? I never got the impression that he ate the Host but we didn’t see much after he actually took it. He even completely disappears from view for a split second. He may well have consumed it as he was moving. Anyway the PMO says he did so I guess that will be it. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a news item provoke more commentary – unfortunately most of it against the Catholic Church.

I believe a bishop can approve a non-Catholic receiving communion in a Catholic Church. I have seen multiple cases on this site where a Catholic and an Anglican (and I believe also a Lutheran) were married in a Nuptial Mass, and the Bishop authorized communion for the Non-Catholic spouse.

There was a longer clip of this on CBC television the other night. It seems that PM Harper and the rest of the official government party at the funeral Mass remained standing in the front pew for Communion so he didn’t line up for it. Thank goodness for that at least! According to the Speaker of the House of Parliament, who is a Catholic, and was standing right next to the PM, Harper did actually eat the host after a moment of hesitation.

In his church Harper would have the experience of receiving the bread and then waiting until everyone had received to consume together. That’s probably what he was waiting for.

Much of the fault here lies with the archbishop. He had to know who Harper was and yet he still gave him Communion, then he says “well, he shouldn’t have taken it.” I mean, really, it was a very awkward moment for the PM so I can’t blame him. His ADC and the protocol officers did a lousy job.

On the Michael Coren Show this evening on TV, he devoted a segment of the show to this topic. The three guest members of tonight’s panel were all non-Catholics. They were the ones who were up in arms about PM Harper actually accepting the Host and thus, showing disrespect for the Catholic Church. Michael Coren who is a very conservative Catholic was the only one basically holding the Archbishop responsible for the whole unfortunate incident.
With the fallout from the Communion fiasco and then his major gaffe today at the G8 Summit, Mr. Harper has had a very bad week. Perhaps tomorrow’s audience with Pope Benedict will benefit him to some extent. It certainly can’t hurt.
