What did I see?

I’m not really sure if this is in the right place to post this, if not please tell me, but I’m curious about something that I think I saw, but I don’t know if it’s even possible.

My dad passed away this past Wednesday. He had been ill for quite some time and was spending his last days in hospice. The day before he died, I prayed the rosary and the divine mercy chaplet for him on the way to hospice. As soon as I got there, I sat in the chair next to him, he began to breathe really heavily, and then I saw a dark floating shadow that was really wispy shoot past me and go toward the window that was open. The doctor came in at nearly the same moment and said that she could see a look of concern on his face like he was scared, so she ordered some meds that would ease him some. The very next day he passed away.

I’m really wondering what I saw. I don’t want to use the word demon, but I felt that there was something sinister in that room with him. I feel like maybe my praying the rosary or having my rosary and my bible with me in the room might have driven it away. Could this be a real possibility? I keep going back to that in my mind and sometimes I have concerns that evil was in the room trying to take him, but then other times I think the evil was driven away, so it’s ok. Could this be what I saw? Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

You might what to talk to a knowledgeable priest about this. The people on this forum could only speculate.

Of course it is possible that demons were conducting spiritual warfare against your dad, but it sounds like the guardian angels and the saints and you were all on the job, doing the Lord’s work! So there is no reason to be troubled.

Of course, it is also possible that demons were trying to scare and worry you, like the annoying pests they are. So trust in Jesus and keep praying for your dad, because that will be the best way to strike back!

Of course, it could also have been nothing, in which case you have not lost anything by praying for your dad. So keep praying!

^ THIS!

Its more likely, given that you were praying for your Dad, that demons want to frighten you into worrying like Mintaka said here.

I just read it on another thread, and its true and will repeat it here that one of Satan’s tactics is to try and make you believe your prayers are worthless, or try and stop you from continuing on in the Lord or they try and frighten you from going further. Having said this, I ask you, does it matter what you saw, knowing this? Just keep praying for your father with faith in the Lord. Remember the St. Micheal’s prayer.

I’m a little confused too… you pray, yet you seem in disbelief at the existence of demons? Is this your concern with your post, or is the concern for your father? If you saw one, don’t marvel over it, though I can understand the pondering over it. Its just a verification of what you are doing (praying, being faithful), and how much it is needed in this world. Many Christians have experienced what you have in one way or another. I have heard many stories. Even among non-believers, there are those who experience this type of thing. One is better prepared when one is a believer in Christ though.

I guess I am in a bit of disbelief. This was my first encounter with something like this. I’m also a little concerned for my dad. Even though I’ve been praying, I got a little scared because I was afraid for him. I was afraid he was being tormented by something evil in his last hours.

Its understandable to be having a bit of disbelief, so I hope what I wrote I didn't upset you.
I want to second the poster who said to go speak to a knowledgeable priest about this. They would be more comforting than I could be to you- or probably most laymen since there are some clergy in the church who are trained and deal with this sort of thing often. Its like second nature to them in dealing with this sort of thing. A good priest would probably be able to assist you further on the fears you shared here in your post too about your father. I don’t want to comment on them since I really do not have that kind of insider knowledge and give you false hope or false fears about it. I simply am not knowledgeable with that sort of thing, though it would be my guess that since The Holy Spirit guides us in what is needed for others, I would take heart that The Holy Spirit through your prayers/praying was already handling the problem.

James 4:7New International Version (NIV)

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

This is what scripture says about this sort of thing and it is very true.

This is definitely one of those situations where we do what we can — offer prayers, sacrifices, Holy Masses — and then simply trust in Jesus.

As I learned from Mother Angelica, doing our best and telling Jesus that we trust Him gives Him an incredible amount of joy. Rather than worrying about things we cannot control, it’s best to simply trust.
