To all my fellow Catholics who care to contribute…
feel free to say what you know , believe, or have seen.

According to the available information
Jesus gave up his Spirit around 3: pm on Friday,
He remained in death all through Saturday,
And rose from death Sunday around 6: am.
that is around 39 hours he spent in death.

During the time He was dead, what did He accomplish ?

God bless all your thoughts
and words

While I don’t think trying to reason time is at all possible as their are to many different ways to do it, especially without full versions saying “He died at x PM and Rose on X at X ect…”

To my knowledge, he ascended into Hell and on the third day rose again.
What he did in Hell? I could give a variety of differing ideas, but I’ll leave that up to the intellectuals.

👍

I’m not sure what he accomplished while he was dead - I do believe that falls under the catagory of things I’m not supposed to have knowlege of because if God wanted me to know about it, I believe He would’ve told me in the Bible. I know this though… since he died on the cross for my sins & rose again, I have the hope of heaven where I can spend an eternity asking Him all the things I don’t quite understand.

🙂 Blessings!

Hi CatholicCid,

Matt. 27: 46 …says "Then towards mid-after noon Jesus cried out in a loud voice…
50… And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His Spirit."

Matt. 28: 1 …"After the sabbath, as the firsr day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene came with the other Mary
to inspect the tomb."

To my knowledge, he ascended into Hell and on the third day rose again.

Why leave it to the intellectuals ?
Jesus entrusted this to you and I !

One of my favorite insights into His death is "The Pre-views " Jesus makes available to us;

Luke 11: 21, 22 **“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed.
But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him,
He takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his spoils.”

…“What you have hidden from the learned and the clever you have revealed to the merest of children.”** Matt. 11: 25

If Jesus can not depend on you and I to treasure this message …
Maybe we leave Him no other choice but to go to “the intellectuals”. 😉

God bless you,

It seems folly to attempt a guess. We are attempting to understand a concept we cannot possibly grasp. God has not revealed that part of the story to us so my guess is we do not need to know. That he died and rose again, giving all of us hope of the resurection is enough for me.

Hi FightingFat,
I believe Hope is awesome !
… but, don’t you want the rest of His offer ?
and,
I think it’s funny that you say;
(A)… "It seems folly to attempt a guess."
then,
You go right ahead and say;
(B)…"…my guess is we do not need to know."
I hope you don’t mind me laughing with you! 😃

Now that brings to mind what Jesus said to the sadducees;
"You are badly misled because you know neither the Scripture nor the power of God."
(Matt. 22: 29)
forgive me if I seem rude…
I want to speak the Truth.
If we do not know these things (or if we do not want to know these things)…Then
**The Armor of God **, which He offers us is missing some important parts.
and it makes us unfit for battle. (see Eph. 6: 10-17)

"Things are hidden only to be revealed at a later time; they are covered so as to be brought out into the open."
Mark 4: 22

"I say to you,‘Ask and you shall receive;
seek and you shall find;
knock and it shall be opened to you.’,"
Luke 11: 9

"If any of you is without wisdom, let him ask it from God who gives generously and ungrudgingly to all,
and it will be given him."
James 1: 5

Hi again Fighting Fat,

P.S.
I appreciate that you have that “Burning Light” of Hope…
Have you considered His encouraging Word in Heb 6: 18,19, 20 ?

to "Seize the Hope which is placed before us…
that Hope extends beyond the veil…"

THAT HOPE is available at every Eucharistic Liturgy.

So how do you recommend we go about finding out what happened to Jesus when he was dead?

Ask the Church!
Paragraph 1. Christ Descended into Hell
632 The frequent New Testament affirmations that Jesus was “raised from the dead” presuppose that the crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to his resurrection.478 This was the first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ’s descent into hell: that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead. But he descended there as Savior, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there.479
[633](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/633.htm’)😉 Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, “hell” - *Sheol *in Hebrew or *Hades *in Greek - because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God.480 Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or righteous, while they await the Redeemer: which does not mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into “Abraham’s bosom”:481 "It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Savior in Abraham’s bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell."482 Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him.483
[634](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/634.htm’)😉 "The gospel was preached even to the dead."484 The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfilment. This is the last phase of Jesus’ messianic mission, a phase which is condensed in time but vast in its real significance: the spread of Christ’s redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption.
635 Christ went down into the depths of death so that "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live."485 Jesus, “the Author of life”, by dying destroyed "him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage."486 Henceforth the risen Christ holds “the keys of Death and Hades”, so that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth."487

well, we know He was dead, as to be raised ‘from the dead’…

we know that when He rose, He wasn’t alone, as saints who
had gone before, rose also…

so, it seems to me, that He did what the church says he did,
decended into death, or hades, or sheol, or hell… and delivered
the gospel to the people awaiting the opening of the gates of
heaven in Abraham’s bosom…

So how do you recommend we go about finding out
what happened to Jesus when he was dead?
When Jesus descended into Hell He didn’t just go there and “allow whatever will happen, to happen to Him”
He already had a plan.
He went there and did exactly what He came to do.
**(1)…He overpowered Satan, carried off the arms on which he was relying and divides the spoils.

(2)… He robbed the devil, the prince of death, of his power and freed those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long. He destroyed our death.

(3)…He brought The New Covenant into force

(4)…He set (name removed by moderator)lace The New Living Path through the veil…
(the “veil” meaning His flesh.)

(5)…He opened a door which no man can shut… through which we may enter into His death… while we live. (Baptism) **

shall I go on…?

Scriptures that confirm this;
(1) Luke 11: 22
(2) Heb. 2: 14,15
(3) Heb. 9: 17
(4) Heb. 10: 20
(5) Rev. 3: 8 / Rom. 6: 3 / 1 Peter 3: 20, 21

God bless you as you add this to your arsenal
The catechism

Just click up one notch

Ask
Seek,
Knock…

(Matt. 7: 7 - 11)

lead you around through the Scripture. 😃
