What did Jesus know and when did he know it?

So, I’m reading the Crucifix on Mecca’s Front Porch and I came across some odd passages about kenotic theology.

There’s so many confusing passages I don’t know where to start. Basically, the author and the sources he quotes say that when Christ emptied himself, he also emptied himself of some divine qualities like omniscience. And that this is the source of his growing in wisdom that St. Luke mentions in his Gospel.

But it goes further than that even. It says that Jesus may not have been aware of his divinity at first, that he experienced doubt and frustration, that he had to grow and learn all these things that I always thought he knew already.

And all of this, which I think might be a heresy but I’m not sure (I read something years ago about a similar sounding position that was condemned), got me thinking, what did he know and when did he know it? Did St. Joseph have to teach him how to do carpentry correctly? If he didn’t quite hear Mary say something did he have to ask her to repeat it or did he already know?

I know this is a complex topic that probably requires a book to explain it but I was just wondering if anyone knew where to study this subject, or if there were simple answers.
