What did Jesus mean by this prayer/statement?

Jesus equates hatred with murder in His sermon on the mount. Therefore, in a sense, we all have a part in cricketing Jesus. If it were not for this prayer, no one would be saved.

‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.’ Luke 23:34

It seems pretty impossible considering the circumstances. Crucifying someone is a pretty horrendous thing. Crucifying God, quite worse.
So what did Jesus mean by the petition?
