What do Baptists believe?

I have gone to a few Baptist churches, and from what I heard from the pulpit and from the pastors, YES, they teach and believe that we worship(or at least give Mary WAYYYY to much credit),

These are just some of the things that i remember from attending baptist churches with friends, but the list of misunderstandings and outright lies are many.
I just couldn’t help but wonder when I read your quote, the part about, “YES, they (baptist churches) teach and believe that we worship or at least give Mary WAYYYY to much credit”. . . well, doesn’t Mary deserve that honor and credit?

Under the circumstances that she was in, not married, very young, poor and pregnant. . . today, if you fit those circumstances, we are taught the misunderstanding and lie of abortion.

Give credit where credit is due.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

I’ve only been Catholic for 4 days. As an ex-Baptist I’ve been trying to think of something that Blacksword left out. Nope, he/she got it all right. I live in a very Baptist area. I’ve been very fortunate. My Baptist friends have asked me a lot of questions and I’ve been able to tell them what we have always thought to be true and what the church really teaches. :gopray2:
God Bless You, as from you post, Its apparent that God is calling you to convert souls for Him through the truth of His Catholic Church. Remember, kind words work wonders.
Peace.

Why is this hard to understand?

If a non-Catholic visits a Catholic Church and watches someone kneel in front of a statue and pray, or kiss the statue’s feet, what are they to think if they don’t know Catholic theology?
We have statues to remind us of the people they represent. Statues help us to remember those that lived holy lives and that loved God and are in Heaven praying for us so we pray to them to help us through intercessory prayer.

We are material people and need material things to help us remember things.

I know for example that I need to write down my grocery list on a piece of paper so I don’t forget what to buy at the store, but it doesn’t mean that I worship paper and pen.

Most protestants think that because of all the statues of Mary, ect, and how some people bow down to it. Its showing respect, not worshiping.

I was raised as a Southern Baptist until my teens when I lost all faith until I found & converted to my beloved Catholic church in 2009. My mother & late grandmother are/were dyed in the wool Southern Baptists ( the old fashioned kind) & all that that entails; no drinking, no dancing, no gambling, basically if you are having fun you are probably doing something you shouldn’t be doing (my mother actually has said this!), etc., etc. etc. They are/were both very anti-Catholic also & some of the things I heard growing up about the Catholic church were that we gamble in church (Bingo in the hall I guess they mean?) that we drink, and drink at church (communion wine I presume), that we pray to people other than God/Jesus (asking for saintly intercession) that we worship Mary, and statues, etc. I’ve tried to explain these things to my dear mom, especially the drinking thing, and I’ve also told her that Jesus himself drank wine, and that if it was good enough for him, it’s good enough for me! You know what she said? She said that the wine Jesus drank was “unfermented” (grape juice I guess) and that it was called “fruit of the vine wine” not “REAL (alcoholic) wine!” You gotta love her, bless her heart. LOL

Thank you peace2u2.

Coming from a strong protestant background I can tell you one problem and that’s what Catholics say and what protestants hear. When a Catholic says “I’m going to pray to Mary or one of the saints for you” a protestant hears that the Catholic is saying that Mary or the saint will bring about whatever you need, not that God has done it. If the Catholic would speak in words that the protestant understands like “I’ll pray and ask Mary or one of the saints to join us in prayer to God” then the protestant although still confused would hear something closer to the truth.

I’m certainly not saying that the Catholic is wrong in what they are saying. I’m trying to show the difference in perception as to what the words mean.

Oh yes I have heard that too! I seem to recall enough cautionary verses about drunkeness to gather that the OT folk knew plenty about fermentation and its effects when indulged to excess.

This will get you the info you want on Southern Baptists. 👍
So will this: 4truth.net/fourtruthpbdenominations.aspx?pageid=8589952985
(see article titled, “Sharing the Good News with Roman Catholic Friends”).

Anti-Catholic behavior is not always vitriolic. I’m a former Southern Baptist and most Baptists I know (including my wife) are salt-of-the-earth folks and downright friendly. That doesn’t mean that they don’t view Catholics as not having heard the “true gospel message.”

Well, stew, you are right about that. Gotta get those Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherns, etc. saved. 😉

… I really didn’t hear anti-Catholic sentiments from the pulpit…
Just last year a certain SBC church (that you and I are both familiar with) commended the youth minister (during worship service) for his efforts to proselytize “Roman Catholic” teenagers.
😉

The ole Calvery and the Cross message. What about the New and Everlasting Covenant called the New Testament?

While I don’t worship Mary, I feel that many women are like me…feeling especially close to her. She is a Mom who saw her Son beaten, spit upon, crucified. I remember a day that we got a cancer scare re. our daughter. I panicked & just kept repeating in my head, "Please God, no…she’s only 21…please God, let her be OK. please God, no. Then I Remember feeling calm & realizing that Mary was praying with me…she knows, she’s a Mother. My daughter did not have cancer, but I’ll never forget how many people & saints I had praying **WITH **me. Mother Mary stayed with me during the nights, I could feel when she “Took over” with the prayers & God let me sleep.

Can you point me to a Catholic website (or Catholic organization) that is dedicated to “sharing the true gospel” specifically with Southern Baptists (based on the premise that because of their church affiliation they are unsaved)?

Thanks Anna!

Do the Baptists think about us more than we think about them? I’ve never heard a homily that even mentioned the Baptists, yet I’ve read (anecdotally) that Baptists are often preaching about & against Catholics.
Actually no, but as it turns out their main interest is statuary.

I was born and raised as a Southern Baptist. I never heard Catholics worshiped Mary nor did I ever hear anyone preach or speak anything anti Catholic. ( have I heard that- yes, but never from anyone associated with the church)

In all honesty, and I really dislike saying this… But I was never aware of the intensity between Catholics and Protestants until visiting this site. This is the only religious site that I’ve truly frequented, so please don’t take the remark as being against CAF. I’m guessing it would be about the same in most places.

Frankly, no one was all that interested in speaking about other religions. The main interest was in helping those who didn’t know Jesus. 😃

Same here, but apparently there’s one guy going around harrassing Roman Catholics. 🙂

And Stewstew is going to come on here in a minute and tell me it’s Tim Tebow’s dad. 😛

I am a BAPTIST and i think alot of your attatudes are wrong.May be you are or where listining to the wrong person, people, or shepard. I was taught not to JUDGE ANYONE BECAUSE OF THEIR BELIEF OR INTENTIONS OF BELIEVING.I have been taught from the beginning(parents) that what ever religion you choose in your life or whatever you do in life to always investigate and learn about what or who you want to be or become. You are to then make your choice. Not all Baptist believe people worship idoils, saints etc. I REALLY DONT CARE WHAT DENOMINATION YOU ARE JUST THAT WE ALL AGREE THAT GOD IS OUR FATHER AND THAT JESUS IS OUR LORD. THAT IS WHAT AND INFORMED,HUMBLE,NON-JUDGEMENTAL,CHRISTIAN IS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE THAN I PRAY THAT THE HOLYSPIRIT WILL GIVE YOU UNDERSTANDING. TKS AND MAY GOD OPEN THE GATES OF HEAVEN AND POUR DOWN BLESSINGS UPON U AND URS.
