What do Baptists believe?

Baptists are not much different from other Protestant churches. Everyone has a specific way of seeing their Christian sects beliefs. I am a Baptist, however I draw from a mixture of other fellow Christian sects. I believe that the Trinity is existant, the Bible is the word of God, Jesus is my Lord and savior, and that demonic posession does exist. I do believe that exorcisms work, and that faith is a very strong power that defends us. I look at fellow Christians as my brethren and sistren, no matter what their “sect” is. I recognize the Pope as a representative of Christianity, I don’t see him as a a higher authority, but a man guided by faith to do good deeds, to lead the Catholic church, and to spread the scripture.

Not surprised stewstew. Some Baptists are targeting our youth–Anglicans need salvation too. 😉 One of the women at our Episcopal Parish said some Baptists even came to her daughter’s school and tried to talk to her there. She was so upset and rightfully so. Another friend in our Parish, who is raising her granddaughter, said Baptists showed up at her door and asked to speak with her granddaughter. She asked why and they said they wanted her to come to their Church. My friend told them her granddaughter already has a Church and politely asked them to leave. I wonder how these Baptists would react if Catholics and Anglicans did these same things to their children?

Our pastor does not (and has said he will not) slam other denominations or churches (including Catholics). And he doesn’t. He’s too busy preaching the Gospel, teaching the Gospel, and trying to help and reach both his church and the lost.

He will state at Communion and Baptism that we believe it be symbolic only, not a sacrament. But he never mentions any group that does believe this, he just states OUR belief, no criticism involved.

I wish there were more back and forth on a local level b/t Catholics and protestants. As others have said, it’s a matter of perception, and dialogue would clarify a lot of misconceptions. We’d probably not ever agree on everything, but we’d definately have better understanding (and hopefully tolerance).

I agree: the dialogue is so important. Of course we aren’t going to agree on everything, but we can clear up misconceptions. Sometimes we find surprising similarities.

We need less :slapfight: and more :grouphug:

Please, don’t take this the wrong way, but I’ve often wondered why Catholics don’t do this or actively participate in outreach. If they did, I probably would have converted years earlier.

I seriously doubt they were targeting a specific child. They do many children’s outreach programs which are quite successful in bringing children and their parents into the church. I’m certain they meant no harm.

I really can’t speak for “baptists”. Just one southern baptist.

But be fair to them, they will also make the altar call to their own baptized members on a regular basis on the assumption that some were saved socially and went through the motions but didn’t really mean it when they stepped forward and made a profession of faith.

Actually, in both of these cases they were targeting specific children.

To go into a school to find a student is a rather serious matter. They have to sign in the office and ask the location of the student. This gets into some questionable legal and ethical issues. They were bypassing the parents altogether. Having grown up in SBC’s, I have no doubt this was part of a strategy.

I’m divorced and I had custody of our son. My former husband didn’t have the legal right to even pick up our son without my producing a copy of the divorce decree showing his visitation rights or my giving the school permission to let him pick up our son. That was actually in the school handbook. So, people, having no parental permission, coming into a school to track down a student is a serious issue. The school should never have allowed it to happen.

I didn’t realize it was one or two people going to see one child at a school. I thought it was a group coming in for certain reason or occasion. Targeting a single child in an area where one is certain their parent will not be around is NOT a part of any legitimate Protestant evangelization. If I were the parent, I would contact the school and church immediately. That is bizarre and scary. This sounds like something other than evangelization…

People knocking on doors and visiting I’ve heard of and know many times the deacons will go out and do this or even youth groups, etc. Same as anyone else with other religious outreach programs. I just meant you can’t judge a denomination on a few loose cannons, zealots, or extremists. Every denomination has some - there’s even a few here! :jrbirdman: :whacky: :takeoff:
