What do you do when with each other? I was Protestant so never the type to go to bars or comedy clubs and most movies are not worth seeing as they have no message. I agreed with that part in any Protestant church I went to.

What do you do when you are together? I mean when you call each other up. I never had many friends when I was younger as I was shy and had some social anxiety.

We do most everything.

Good movies. Good restaurants and plays (my wife and I enjoy Shakespeare festivals and musicals).

Concerts at the local university or art shows in mid-town Sacramento.

Picnics. Gardening. Visiting the Missions along El Camino Real (it was our cheap honeymoon trip many years ago!).

And the bars we go to are usually not seedy or loud. She drinks chai tea and I will have a gin or some wine.

Sit around in robes, talking in Latin.

I’m totally kidding, though I at one point had my brother-in-law believing that we all really did speak Latin to one another (which would be really cool, but isn’t true).

Well, Catholics are allowed to drink, so some go to bars maybe, or have a drink at a BBQ. That could be very different from protestants, depending on the sect (though Catholics are not supposed to get drunk, that would be Gluttony). What have I done with my Catholic friends?

Watched movies at home, gone to Starbucks, had a BBQ, celebrated the Fourth of July, talked about a book we were both reading, made dinner together, gone hiking, went kayaking, road trips to see other friends, gone shopping, took younger siblings trick-or-treating, text each other, tell each other jokes.

We’re normal people. Not to say there aren’t specific times or groups where you might be discussing the Bible (usually with the catechism), prayed the rosary together, publically celebrated Fatima (which is a ton of fun), or watched the CCD kids put on a play about St. Nicholas. We’re known for our Knights of Columbus Bingo, Boy Scout Pancake Breakfasts, and Lenten Fish Fries. Generally, for fun though, it’s just hanging out together.

Last night I learned a new dominoes game. I’m trying to get someone to work out with me but it’s cold out. I like coffee and donuts time after Mass. My friends and I tell jokes and talk about ideas a lot. I’m hoping to rustle up a game of Scrabble soon. Tonight a friend and I went out to a bar but didn’t drink. We ate dinner and talked. A couple of my other friends went clothes shopping together. If I were younger and had more money I would want to go dancing and I could as long as it was really dancing and not something gross, which I wouldn’t like anyway. What do you like to do?

I’m a bit of a loner so I don’t like hanging around crowded places much. Even so, personally I would have done things which a normal person does, provided they don’t cross certain limits.

It’s not like Catholics would start to speak in Greek/Latin/Hebrew/Aramaic when they are talking with each other or wear shiny vestments and bless each other with holy water. That would be pretty cool, but not everyone has the time to learn said languages and only clerics own vestments. 😛

Well, we’re not always in exclusively Catholic company. Did you socialize only with people from your church.

I guess that would be the biggest difference between Catholics and some non-Catholic Christian churches. Most Catholics have friends who aren’t Catholic.

When we’re together, we do whatever interests us.
