It seems that bi-weekly used to be the average for serious Catholics, and weekly for the very pious. Then came Vatican II, and it appears monthly is average for the serious Catholic and I don’t know any very pious so I can’t address them.Looks like there is no consensus in here on what “frequent confession” is. I am just a little sensitive to this issue in that I was once told by a confessor that bi-weekly was too often. Honestly, that kind of ticked me off.
I would say do what is comfortable.
As for striving for holiness, pick a saint to model after.
My thought is this, if you do an examination of conscience every evening before bed keep a journal of your sins. Remember the criteria for mortal sin, a) serious matter, b) done knowing it was serious matter, and c) done intentionally/willfully. If your sins are mortal, go immediately to confession regardless of how long it has been since your last confession. If your sins are venal (sp?) then go bi-weekly or monthly as you feel most comfortable.
Most of your sins well fall into the venal category, study your journal for patterns. Do you find that there are one or two sins that you just keep doing over and over again? Discuss this with your confessor. Find one sin and work to overcome it, when you’ve got that sin beaten into submission, pick another.
In reading the posts on this thread, I have come to the realization that people who are victims of the sin of scrupulosity spend all of their time thinking about themselves instead of God. They should keep their eyes on what God is doing, instead of what they are doing, and they may find that they grow holier quicker and feel the need for confession less often.
