After huge pain and struggle my wife and I will soon sadly be divorced.
I am on RCIA and she is lapsed. For her she is clear that after the papers come through we are simply divorced.
I understand that we are not divorced in the eyes of the Catholic Church but what do I say when refering to my marital state?

Am I

divorced?
civil divorced?
separated?
civil separated?
or some such other phrase?

I want to use a phrase which is considered appropriate with the understandings and beliefs of the Catholic Church for use in conversation and form filling when marital status is asked for.

Also is she my
ex wife?
civilly separated wife?
civil ex?
her outdoors?

Help!!!

Thanks
Peter

You are divorced. The Catholic Church doesn’t recognize or grant “divorces” so no one will mistake a civil divorce as having any impact on your status as a married Catholic. If you ever decide to have your marriage investigated for nullity, then the distinction will come up.

If it were concluded that your marriage was null, then you would be “single.” 🙂 HTH
